Roborock S5 Max Review (2026): Still Worth It or Time to Upgrade?

From all I gathered, S5 MAX is a newer and better all around performer if you need mopping and vacuuming combo. It shares hybrid design of Chinese P5 (Sensors/hardware design) and T7(E-tank/rubber bumper) from what I can see and isn't available in China. Its a "Global model" since the rest of the world didn't get the regular T7 which is the "upgrade" to the former T6/S6. There is a global T7 PRO, but its rebranded as the S6 MAX V everywhere else and comes with a slower charger and downgraded floor mat compared to the Chinese variation.

IMO, the S6 is a more premium design (sensors/adaptive pathing), but its also older and may perform worse in absolute objective testing. S6 is generally quieter since it has a muffled vent where it exhaust air. The S6 also comes with more accessories and the better/faster charger that comes on all "high end" Roborocks in china. The floor mat is also thicker and movable unlike the newer stuff released within this year (requires using double sided tape to secure).

The S6 shares no mop zones with the S5 MAX/S6 MAX V, but the tank is obviously gravity fed. All the other global Roborock models with water tanks do not support this feature.

Shame there was a mistake. So from my point of view, the S6 is better if you are not going to use mopping as often. It is quieter, in my opinion, has a better build quality, and includes more accessories. The S5 Max has an upgraded mopping system with an electronic water tank and more pressure to the ground. The tank is also bigger than the S6. The electronic water tank means you can set water level control in the app. The S6 water tank has a manual switch for those who are not going to use the app as much.

The S5 max also has customized settings for each room meaning you can set water level and cleaning mode for each room. In my experience, I rarely use this option.
As to the tank size, I use the Roborock S6 MaxV which has the same mopping system, and after cleaning my 70 square meters apartment, there is still 150 ml of water left in the tank.

To sum up: if you have a big area of hard floor to mop and you know you are going to use mopping every other day, the S5 Max probably would be better. For vacuuming purposes and occasional mopping, the S6 is just fine.
If you are going to use the bot every other day you would probably not see the difference between the two.

The crossing ability of the S5 Max is 2cm max, anything that is higher might get troubles climbing for the robot.
If you want the robot to create a map of the level 2, you bring it to the level 2 and start cleaning. When it finishes cleaning it will stop and alert. Then it will ask you to save the map. If your floor is not too big and you sure the robot can finish cleaning on one charge, you don't need to move the charging station upstairs.

You can not use the S6 water tank with the S5 Max because of the different ways of the build. If you look closer, you will notice that the S6 container does not have openings that would allow water from the S5 Max water tank to drip right to the pad while the original S5 Max pad has these.

On Reddit, many people claim they use some detergent with the S5 and S6, but I would not recommend it for the S5 Max.

I've ordered a S5 Max and was hoping I can use some detergent/disinfectant for mopping. My original idea was to use the S5 Max water tank and mop pad with just water to avoid damaging the pump and to use the S5/S6 water tank (filled with detergent) to clean/disinfect. When the S5/S6 tank would be on, the S5 Max water tank would be empty. So it does not matter if the holes are not there. But for this to work, the S5/S6 tank should be able to physically fit the S5 Max. I now understand this is not the case. Thanks again for the help! I will send back the S5 Max and will get an S5. I do no have much use for a plain water mop. For S5/S6, if detergent is used, the worst thing that can happen is for the 2 filters/wicks to break. But they are cheap and easy to replace.

Ah I see now. The S6 water tank is bigger than the S5 Max pad and can't fit to the robot (just tried it, didn't work). I must say that the S5 mopping is worse than the S5 Max, it would basically be dragging the wet cloth around but if you do not try to replace manual mopping, it should work just fine. I would suggest getting the S5 Max for those who don't want to mop (manually) that often.

well, yes, technically you are correct. This option is still in beta and a bit challenging to use. Unfortunately, I do not live in a multi-story house and can't test it myself but as far as I know, the edited map is always the same, once you set no-go zones, this map is always can be restored while the current and backup maps change depending on where the robot cleaned.
But again, I can't confirm myself since I don't have two floors to test this feature.

Thanks Natalie. I played around with it a bit more but yes; it looks like you just have to re-map the 2nd floor each time - but at least one map can be saved.

My house is split-level so although it's 2 floors, there are 4 actual levels which makes this quite challenging...!

Hopefully they will develop this into a full multiple maps feature.

A black or dark carpet doesn't reflect infrared light from the cliff sensors and the robot thinks that this is a cliff and avoids this area. I've seen the same behavior in all robot vacuums I've tested since they use the same infrared cliff sensors. Even expensive Roomba models have such problems. I've never tested Eufy, maybe they use some other type of cliff sensors, I also know that Neato Botvac D7 works with dark carpets, but unfortunately, all the Roborock models have the same issue with black floors/carpets.

I have tried attaching the disposable mops of the S6 to the S5 Max and it fits perfectly. You can see it on the pictures down below.
On the first pic, the wipe is attached to the S6 water tank; on the second pic - to the S5 Max mopping pad.

Thank you Natalie, my question about the adapter was referred to the mops (as I saw store selling the disposable mops with an adapter, probably it is needed for the S50).
So far I am really happy with my S5max, it is the first robot so I cannot make comparisons, but impressed by how gentle it is when navigating around the house and how whell it gets around obstacles.

Indeed, the Roborock robots are the best in terms of navigation and how gentle they are towards furniture.
I actually know nothing about an adapter for the disposable mops, didn't know it needs one :)

I have tested most of the Roborock robots and never had an issue with it crossing a threshold but I really don't have very high thresholds as well. I used it on a 15 mm (0.6 in) plank and high-pile carpets and all of them except for the S4 did well.
Have a look at this video. In the comment section, the user says a Roborock works better on high-pile carpets than the Ozmo 950 but the Ozmo does handle thresholds better.
The Roborock S5 Max has the same climbing ability as the Roborock S6 but if you don't have really tall obstacles, it should handle them well.

The multi-floor feature is in beta and might not be as good as other top-level models are.
To make the robot know where it is, you should manually choose the map you need in the app before starting the robot.
You don't necessarily have to buy two docking stations but you should be aware the robot returns to the dock when it finishes the job, otherwise if you manually move it upstairs to dock it you might not have the cleaning cycle in the cleaning history.

Which product has the best multi-story capabilities?

I didn't test the latest Roombas but I believe they are one of the best. It is able to recognize its location when placed downstairs manually (or at least this is what the company claims).

The S5 Max dustbin does not fit into any of the Roborock I own (S4, S5, S6) but you can use the same filter in all of these models.
The cleaning brush is also can be used in all of them.
The side brush is identical too.

Basically, you can use all of the spare parts of the S5 Max with the S6 but the dustbin.

It depends on how often you are going to use the robot and how big is your house.
I personally have never bought spare parts for my robots but I don't really use my 360 S6 that often because I get to test other models from time to time.

But keep an eye on the filter, it's washable so it does not need to be changed as often but once the app tells you it should be replaced, do it.

I don't know what the price for the S5 Max will be in Sweden, but I also think it will be more expensive than the Viomi or the regular S5.
The Viomi still does not have all the issues solved by now.

I would recommend going with a Roborock anyway, it has better customer support, a user-friendly app and so on.

When choosing between the S5 and S5 Max it all depends on what you personally want your robot to be capable of doing. If you want better mopping, go with the S5 Max, if you are going to use room cleaning, go with the S5 Max too. If you want a better experience in terms of noise level, go with the S5 Max because it's not as loud.

If you don't want to spend more, the S5 is still a great option to get. It might lack some features and does not have an advanced mopping system but it does a great job on carpets too.

I can't say for sure which one is better since I've never tested the Ozmo 950, so my opinion can be a bit biased. I've read a few opposite opinions about these two robot vacuums compared. From what I've heard, Roborock has better customer support (check comments under this video https://youtu.be/yzw0kadBoH8, this guy owns the Ozmo 950 and Roborock S6). I can confirm, I've contacted them via email a few times and received a response within an hour.

I received the Roborock S5 Max yesterday but didn't test it yet. I don't think there is a huge difference between the Roborock S6 and S5 Max in terms of cleaning performance and navigation, except the mopping feature. I'll write a detailed comparison of the S6 and S5 Max.

Sure! I'm already working on it. I'll update this article with a hands-on review until the end of the week. I've already tested the mopping feature in this video. I also want to compare how good is it on carpets compared to the Roborock S4/S6. I don't think that it is very different in terms of suction or cleaning performance compared to the Roborock S6, it has the same 2,000 Pa suction motor and roller brush, so probably the significant difference is only in the improved mopping feature. The app features look pretty similar to the S4 and S6 models (except separate no-go zones for mopping and the ability to change the water level in the app).

Thanks for the update. The Roborock 5 Max looks to be very attractive especially with it's larger water bin and ability to work on multiple floors (as long as you don't need no-go zones/lines on one of them).

I wish Roborock would catch up with Roomba, Shark and 360 in regards to allowing a high number of maps available for its users. For this reason, I decided to go with the 360 S5 on Amazon. If it doesn't work out I'll definitely give the Roborock S5 Max a shot.

If you don't live in a big apartment, the S5 would be just fine. The major downside of the S5 is the short battery life, it works up to 30 minutes on Max mode. But if you don't have carpets and not going to run it in high suction settings, you will get longer runtime.

According to Gearbest, delivery to the US takes 3-10 days + a few days order processing time. It is pretty safe to order from Gearbest, and they are the official partner of Roborock. But of course, there is some risk that if something wrong with the product, you will need to send it back to China and pay the return shipping cost. You only need a plug adapter, since the robot already supports 110-220V power supply.

You can buy a US figure 8 power plug from amazon. I am using my Playstation 4 power plug in the meantime.

My husband ordered the lenovo vacuum on cyber Monday. To this day we have not gotten it. They sent us emails reassuring we would get it by christmas. Yesterday the email and said we can't get it (trade embargo item). So we did not have a good experience.

As far as the adapter, I was told one would be sent.

The Viomi V2 Pro is better in terms of mopping cleaning results. Going to be honest with you, I love the way Viomi mops. It really does a great job and is the best mopping robot I have ever tested. Because of the Y-shapes path, it can get rid of stubborn stains instead of just dragging the cloth around. But I am not a fan of their customer and product support because as I mentioned before, Roborock regularly updates its products, even the old S5 receives updates every once in a while.
Since I've owned the Viomi it received a few updates only, the app is still baggy, English is broken and so on... But as a mopping robot, it is a great unit.
And yes, according to Gearbest, it supports 110-240V input power.

You may have a look at the latest Xiaomi STYJ02YM, at least it is a well-known brand, the company supports its products and cares about its reputation.

Again, if you need a mopping robot.

But I still prefer the Roborock tho it might be equal to the new Xiaomi in terms of features but with Roborock I always know I will get an answer to my question shortly after asking when if you get a Xiaomi I don't even know who to contact with.

On a side note just want to confirm that Xiaomi STYJ02YM also support 110-240V input power.

The Roborock S5 Max has advantages but it does not follow a Y-shape path which I find very effective. But yes, you understand correctly, I trust Roborock more :)

The Xiaomi is a good product too, it has good specifications and overall looks good. I will have a chance to test it soon so I can say for sure what is better but for now, I would go for a Roborock anyway.

Would you choose this or the 360 s7? We have rugs, hard wood floors and furry animals.

Definitely the Roborock. I love the way 360 S7 vacuums but nothing can beat the S5 Max in terms of mopping.

Again, if you don't need mopping that much and want to save a dollar, you can go with the 360 S7, it is a great machine. It also mops but would not be as efficient as the S5 Max in terms of mopping.

1) The S5 Max supports 110-220V input power capacity, but on GearBest, it comes only with an EU plug, so you would need to buy a plug adapter if you have a different type of power socket in your country.
2) The S5 Max dustbin is inserted, together with the water tank in place so it is capable of mopping and vacuuming at the same time.
3) As for the differences between the two I would pay attention to these:

• The Roborock S5 Max has a better climbing ability which means it is more suitable for carpets and overall does good with thresholds, etc.


• The S5 Max is also much more powerful which might be not a big deal if you don't have carpets but really makes a difference on carpeted surfaces.


• The Roborock supports no-mop zones that keep your carpets dry when it's mopping. The Ozmo recognizes carpets too and avoids them but I have heard it does not work as good in real life.


• ECOVACS is known for its baggy app, it loses maps, and overall works not as smooth as the Mi Home or Roborock apps. Plus, a Roborock receives updates regularly which I can't say for sure about the DEEBOT.


• The Roborock is quieter. When I say that I mean that you won't really notice it running around while the Ozmo would annoy you when working.


• The S5 Max runs longer, up to 3 hours on low power settings, and 2,5 hours on balanced mode. If you live in a big house, better go with the Roborock.


• One thing to keep in mind about the Ozmo - it comes with a suction inlet and main cleaning brush. The inlet is great for pet hair and hard floors while the main brush agitates debris on carpets. The Roborock comes equipped with one of the best brush rollers in the industry. It might be not as good as the suction inlet but it works well on both surfaces and very easy to clean if needed. It overall has good anti-tangle technology, maybe one of the best in the business.


• The Roborock has a HEPA filter that can be washed with water and is safe for allergy sufferers. The Ozmo has a high-efficient filter which is not true HEPA.
  In general, HEPA-type filter has a 99% efficiency rate of capturing particles as small as 2 microns. True HEPA filter up the game with a better 99.97% efficiency rate at particles as small as 0.3 microns. (source). It might not make a difference if you don't have an allergy or asthma but a washable filter is better because when it's clogged, it decreases suction and also, washable filters last longer than non-washable.

Both have water leaking control in the app so you know what level you need to do the job, I would recommend going with max level though. Both supports zoned cleaning, room cleaning, and no-go zones.

To conclude:

The Ozmo 930 is suitable for homes with hard floors and pets. Not good for carpets and allergy sufferers. Also, is not designed for big homes.

The Roborock S5 Max is ideal for big homes with carpets an some hard floor areas to mop, safe for allergy and asthma sufferers, suitable for thin and thick carpets (not thicker than 20 mm (0.8 in) tho).

P.S. As for myself, I would get the Roborock, because you will know for sure, the company supports this product by regularly updating the app, answering your questions fast if you have any, and overall the product is a great value for the price.

Can you please clarify one more thing for me? S5 max says that it has no mop zones. I have few carpet and rugs in my floor. My entire floor do not have carpet. Only about 10 to 15% of entire floor is covered with carpet and rugs.

1) Is it possible to set up specific 3-5 sections (not rooms) of carpet and rugs to exclude for mopping?
2) When we set up no mop zone, do robot go on these places vacuum but not mop? What I mean is robot will vacuum entire floor but exclude just no mopping zone for mopping. Correct? When robot go for vacuuming on no mop zones, it does not drop water from water tank. Correct?

1) Yes, when you set no-mop zones the Roborock knows it should not go there when it mops
2) No-Go and No-Mop zones are separate features. When setting no-go zones, you keep the robot off certain zones either when it mops or sweeps (I have not tested the S5 Max, but I believe I understand correctly). When you set no-mop zones, the robot will not go there while mopping attachments are on, once you remove them, the no-mop zones disappear and the robot can vacuum there. With no-mop zones, the robot will avoid these areas anyways when mopping. Technically, it is almost impossible to make the robot vacuum only, because the mopping pad is wet from mopping anyway so you can't make it stop mopping on carpet even if the water stops dripping on carpet.

Answering your question: if you set no-mop zones, the robot will not vacuum or mop there in any case, it will avoid those zones as long as mopping attachments are on. When it's finishing mopping, you can run it again to vacuum the rugs separately and it will go there if you remove mopping attachments.

I am not aware of a robot that would go on carpet with mopping attachments without having to mop it. Maybe in the future, we will have a chance to buy a robot that can do both: mop hard floors and vacuum carpets at the same time without damping carpets but for now, it's all we have :)

Unfortunately, I don't know anything about it so far. It looks great but I can't say for sure this robot will be updated regularly, has accessories sold everywhere or good customer support.

It has great specifications but sometimes you have to get into details to know the product.

I would get a Roborock because it is a trusted brand but so is Lenovo... Wish I could say more though. We can wait for a week or so and maybe someone will review it :)

Check out this post, they already testing voice commands for the Roborock app. I'm not sure if they are testing it only for Alexa or for Google Home as well. Anyway, I think Google Home support will be added to the Roborock app soon. The Roborock app was released a few months ago, I believe there will be even more features than the Mi Home has.

No problem, let me make it a bit clearer for you:

1. I am not sure about the pressure and its performance since I haven't tested the S5 Max but the S5 Max has different water dripping settings which help to provide better mopping results.
2. I have not noticed any issue with the side brush not spinning when used the S6. It boosts spinning speed when goes along walls and corners to provide better pickup and does not spin on thick shaggy carpet sometimes but it does not cause worse performance. I did not see any differences when it does or does not spin on carpet while yes, on hard floor, it makes a difference but again, it works just fine on bare floor.
3. The S5 Max has the same cleaning brush the S4 and S6 does so I would say yes, it is easy to clean the tangled hair, much better than solid brushes I used to see in the Viomi V2 or the Roborock S5. All you should do is use the cleaning tool to tear off the hair and remove the side tips too. Not as good as the Roombas tangle-free rollers but much better than the brushes other manufacturers use.
4. The Roborock S5 Max should be available in the US by the end of the year and I believe it will be in the EU by then as well. Not sure about the import duties things.

Sorry but how is this noise improvement calculated to result 50%? Between 62 and 58 there are only 4 db difference. How can 4 db represent 50% improvement over 62? 50% means half from the initial value. So 62/2=31 not 58.

Good question. The decibel (dB) is a logarithmic unit, so there is no linear correlation between these numbers. For example, the sounds associated with jet planes measure 120-140 dB, but it's certainly tens or hundreds of times louder than the robot vacuum. It's hard to say for sure that there is a 50% difference between the 58 and 62 dB, but at least that is what the manufacturer claims.

Decibel are logarithmic scale, a +3dB difference is the same as doubling the amount of sound pressure (yes, a 58dB is twice as loud as 55dB and 4x times louder than 52dB).
So 58dB is around half the amount of sound pressure generated at 62dB (even less actually)

This is the response I got from Roborock on the multi mapping thing: "The S5 Max and the S6 would both save up to two manual maps that the users have edited, however it is not the same as saving two separate maps for multi-level (we are working on that)."

I believe because of the bigger water tank, it was harder to build a bigger dustbin so we got what we got with the S5 Max.

I know this is a late response, but its due to the newer location of the motor/fan. The original S5 and S6 have the motor fan on the left side. All the newer roborocks are dead center behind the filter.. Seems to promote better airflow in exchange for a smaller bin.

The S5 Max is not available in the US yet so it does not come with a US plug, I believe when it will be on sale in the US, it will have a US plug.

I bought my s5 Max from gearbest and it came with a EU plug, but that wasn't a problem. It's a universal figure 8 plug, so I went on Amazon and bought a white US one that matched with the white s5 Max, or you can just buy a EU to US adapter. I didn't buy the adapter because it would be sticking out about an inch in the wall outlet.

The biggest improvement in the S5 Max over the S6 is its mopping feature.

1. The S5 MAX has a bigger water tank (280 ml vs. 150 ml).
2. The newest model follows a Y-shape pattern in mopping mode which is more efficient and better at removing stains.
3. The S5 MAX has no-mop zones that you can set so the robot avoids carpets and also no-go lines that keep the robot off some other places. Once the mopping attachments are removed, no-mop zones disappear. The S6 only supports no-go lines.
4. The S5 MAX runs longer (180 min vs. 150 min), more suitable for larger houses.
5. Now you can control water flowing in the app instead of switching the toggle on the water tank itself.
6. You can schedule the S5 MAX to mop in a specific room whenever you want which you can't do with the S6.
7. The new model is more intelligent with the recharge&resume feature. It does not need to charge up to 80% when it's battery runs out of power, the robot calculates how much battery life it needs to finish the job which means you don't have to wait a few hours until it resumes cleaning.

If you think of switching your S6 to the S5 MAX, it might not be the best idea but if you are looking to get the S6 or the S5 MAX, I would recommend going with the latest model. The mopping feature is really better here. I have tried the Viomi V2 with a similar mopping pattern and it is significantly better than any other 2-in-1 robot vacuum cleaner I have tested.
If you live in a big house and feel like 150 minutes would not be enough to cover the whole space go with the S5 Max but I feel like 2,5 hours is more than enough for most households.
But if you don't really need mopping and you will not use it, the S6 is a great choice to go with.

What is difference with this new Xiaomi :Xiaomi Mijia V2 STYJ02YM (2019) ?
The battery is lower but it's seems that is a new model better than S5 max.

I have read somewhere that both S5 Max and S6 have 180 min working time (depending of used power).

It's hard to measure, officially they both run up to 150 minutes and I was wrong when said the S6 works longer because they both have the same motor and battery and I believe both can do 180 minutes on eco mode.

But I do think the S5 Max is a better value because of mopping and customizable settings. The Roborock S6 is more expensive but it also has an extra filter, extra mopping cloth, and 10 disposable wipes.

Yes I can do it. I am supposed to get S5 Max Thursday. For Corona reasons, it is going to be delivered to my car in front of the shop. In Finland prices are just now the same. Both are 499 euros (S6 and S5 Max).

I am going to try it on two floors. Putting the docking unit to both floors. I mean move it before . Did you have a special "plan" how to manage two floors? I mean have you tried after December 2019 to work with two floors?

Do you have a trick to "draw" no-go-zone for a carpet? I'll try black tape to fool S5 Max to think there is a staircase and then find the carpet from the map.

Here you can read a comment about how to manage multimapping. It is about the Roborock S4 but they all have it the same way.
I have not tested this option myself simply because I have nowhere to try it. What has happened in December 2019 btw?
re: drawing no-go-zone. I just set no-mop zones where my carpet is so the robot does not go there in mopping mode or I misunderstood your question?

It is not so easy to draw no-go-zones by the phone, when you are not able to figure out, where the carpet really precisely is. Black tape could show after cleaning, where the carpet is. Just an idea.

Tried only mopping without carpets. And no borders set.

Two floors tested, but could not get map. Or it did draw new map, but destroyed after docking. I carried docking station down stairs. Started the robot. It ran over the station and when returning, could not excatly position itself.

The map is being created after you start the robot from the dock and it finishes docking itself by itself without being manually moved upstairs. Try it out, should work just fine.

I did not quite understand. I have now three maps and they all are same (small modifications each). I moved the dock downstairs and did cleaning there. Then I moved the dock back to the original place upstairs.

Ah I see. You said you couldn't get the map so I figured you might need some suggestions of how to :)

The robot saves three maps (actually two) and only one stays the same (with edited areas). "Multimapping" is quite complicated, you can not have two separate maps. I mean you can, but the first and last one will always be the same so if you run the robot on the floor with edited areas, you will have the identical three maps. It's tricky but can work if you play with it a bit.

At the Roborock official website, it is claimed that this robot has 14 sensors.

I have asked and the official Roborock support answered the new model has 13 types of sensors. Besides, I can't find any information about the sensors at the official website.

The battery is lower but it's seems that is a new model better than S5 max.

Our readers complain about the Mi Home app (the Viomi V2 model) which may cause the new Xiaomi as well. It is not stable while the Roborock app is sleek, stable, and complete. The Roborock app also gets updates regularly in case there is a bug that needs to be fixed.

The difference between the Xiaomi and new Roborock:

1. The new Roborock has no-mop lines for mopping and no-go lines for sweeping, the Xiaomi supports no-go lines only.
2. The S5 MAX can be scheduled to mop at a specific time.
3. The S5 Max is smart enough to power up the battery to the level it needs to finish the job, not to 80% as other models do.
4. The S5 Max runs longer.
5. The new Roborock climbs an obstacle up to 20 mm height vs. 15 mm the Xiaomi does which is better for carpets.

Even though some things might be better in the Xiaomi, the app is still raw which you won't experience with the Roborock app.

I mean comparing the S5 max and the Xiaomi Mijia STYJ02YM. the both are very recent and similar. The STYJ02YM has a better vaccum power (2100 instead 2000). the STYJ02YM is new ( August 2019)
