Summary

The company has stepped forward by making the new product better, improving the mopping experience for its users, keeping the Roborock S5 Max as powerful, and having a user-friendly app. The model meets expectations for those who live in a big house, have pets, many carpets, and also some areas without carpet since now it is a robot vacuum that can avoid carpets when mopping. The Roborock S5 Max is not only one of the best robots that do a great job at vacuuming but also the best robot I have tested that has excellent mopping performance. If I had fewer carpets, I would use the mopping feature every other day because it is fantastic! I personally think it is one of the best Roborock models so far, and I would recommend this model to anyone who wants proper mopping ability and excellent vacuum performance, have pets or struggle from allergy/asthma.

I have always been a big fan of Roborock robot vacuum cleaners. I have had a chance to test the Roborock S5, S4, S6 and even its budget version the Xiaowa C10. I run each of them every once in a while and still impressed by the performance and how clean my carpets look after each use. Since the release of the S5 many things have been changed and the S5 Max took the best from each model.

Two weeks ago I got my hands on the latest Roborock S5 Max. The S5 Max takes all of the great things from the S5 that we all love and makes them better and smarter.

Roborock robots are known for nearly perfect navigation and being gentle with furniture. You should not worry about it not covering the whole place especially with the ability to track the movements in real-time, which is not presented in many high-end models such as a Neato Botvac D7 Connected or Roomba i7+/s9+. One of the best things about Roborock robots is that they are suitable for both: hard floors and carpet, and the S5 Max got it to the highest level because now it has updated mopping technology and everyone who wanted to have a robot with mopping will be excited to try it.

The new model has a bigger water tank, many options for mopping, smart features and performance that surprised me in a good way. What has been changed comparing to the Roborock S5? What makes it different from the Roborock S6? Let's see what the Roborock S5 Max offers and who is the device for.

Appearance

At first glance, the Roborock S5 Max looks very similar to its predecessor, the Roborock S5: the same shape and elements location, and a similar charging dock to the one that comes with the Roborock S5.

Roborock S5 Max
Roborock S5 Max

There are a few improvements in the S5 Max, and the most significant one is the completely redesigned mopping system. All the previous models used a slim 150 ml water tank and mopping pad attached underneath when the S5 Max equipped with a large 290 ml water tank.

Roborock S5 Max with a water tank installed

The difference is not only in the mopping tank, the S5 Max has a built-in water pump which takes the necessary amount of water (which can be adjusted in the app) from the water tank and sprays it on the mopping pad.

A dustbin and water tank are always installed which means if you want the robot to mop, you can either make it sweep and mop or only mop.

How long will it take to clean your home?

The new Roborock S5 Max runs for the whole 150 minutes on balanced mode and up to 180 minutes on quiet mode before it needs to recharge.

The S5 Max is ideal for big houses

When the battery runs out of charge, the robot returns to recharge up to the level it needs to finish the job and then resumes cleaning. While the previous generations needed to recharge up to 80% before resumption, the new Roborock S5 Max calculates how much space remains to be cleaned and returns to the dock to top up enough power to finish the cleaning cycle. With this feature, the robot saves time spent during charging.

The Roborock S5 Max cleans one square meter (10.76 sqf) in 1 minute so a 100 square meters (1076 sqf) apartment will be covered in about 100 minutes.

Mopping Improvements

The biggest improvements in the latest model - the mopping feature. It has a bigger water tank (290 ml) compared to 150 ml the Roborock S5/S6 have.

The water tank and mopping pad
The water tank and mopping pad

In mopping mode, the S5 Max can go up to three times over the cleaning area covering a 65sqm (700sqft) apartment or a 200sqm (2600sqft) home if it's running once.

In the app, you can control the level of water dripping depending on the light of heavy jobs (there are three water dripping levels: low, medium, high). The Roborock S5 doesn't have any water control, the Roborock S6 has a toggle on a water tank and two levels of water dripping. The toggle is not as convenient as the app control.

Choose the right water flow via the Roborock app

If the robot cleans small areas, it turns off the water when it goes over the areas it has already mopped. After finishing the job, it shuts off the water allowing the mop to dry before the Roborock returns to the dock.

Now you can set no-mop zones so the carpet will not get wet when the robot is mopping. You can also mix them up with no-go zones when the cleaner is vacuuming. The no-mop zones disappear once the mopping pad and cloth are off. Leave your carpets dry while the S5 Max is mopping with the new no-mop zones feature.

Mopping test: Can the S5 Max remove stains?

So let's talk about my experience with mopping and how good the Roborock S5 Max at mopping. Can the Roborock S5 Max replace manual mopping?

To make stains, a mix of cocoa and Coca-Cola was used, and the area was also covered with oatmeal. Since the water tank and dustbin are separated containers and are being placed together all the time, the Roborock S5 Max can do mopping and sweeping at the same time. You can also turn off the mopping or sweeping if it is needed.

I set the highest level of water dripping and let the Roborock S5 Max go clean the stains. It leaves visible wet marks on the floor either on low and high water leaking settings, by the way.

So the Roborock removed most of the stains in one pass, and it was impressive! I think the Roborock S5 Max did a great job by improving the mopping system. Because it is now closer to the floor, it does an excellent job when mopping.

Thanks to the improved mopping technology, the Roborock S5 Max is able to get rid of stubborn stains

The stains were completely gone after three passes.

When the test was done, I run the Roborock around the whole place on the highest water dripping settings, set no-mop zones around my rug so it could avoid it, and waited for it to finish. It needed 38 minutes to clean 38 square meters of hard floors. Before letting it go, I filled the water tank with water (290 ml), and by the end of the cleaning cycle, 130 ml of water was left in the tank. When testing the same cleaning cycle on the lowest settings, there were 170 ml of water left. I assume the 290 ml water tank is enough to cover 100 square of hard flooring area.

The S5 Max also the first robot (of at least the first of what I know of) that has customized mopping.

When setting mopping options, you are allowed to choose from any water dripping level (or shut mopping off) along with sweeping modes (none, silent, balanced, turbo, max). So basically you can choose either you want the robot to mop, sweep only or sweep and mop at the same time and also set the mode that would be better for the room the robot is going to clean.

With the app, you can edit rooms, set no-go zones, divide the map into separate sections. Also, customize cleaning by setting suction power and water level

I would recommend setting it on the highest water level and balanced mode in the kitchen or any other high-traffic area. For the living room and bedroom, I would go with medium settings. You can also set the same water level and cleaning mode for the whole house if you don't want to play with different settings.

The customized mode is my favorite. It basically allows you to choose different water levels and sweeping modes for each room. If you didn't set it for some rooms, the app would do it on default (balanced mode and medium water level).

Customize suction and water level for each room depending on cleaning tasks

When setting no-go zones, I noticed that they are active all the time, so the robot will not go to the places with no-go zones set. But with no-mop zones, it is different. Yes, you can set them in the no-go zone tab, and they will be there, but if you do not install the pad, you will not see them on the main map. Basically, they become invisible when the mopping pad is not attached.

Mapping and navigation

The newest Roborock S5 Max is equipped with 14 types of sensors including 4 cliff sensors and Lidar for more precise mapping and navigation. 2 of them let you know whether the filter gets clogged or it is in position, and whether the water tank is inserted or not. You will get a notification as well as the robot will tell you by voice if there is something wrong with any of these parts.

Same as the previous Roborock S6, the Roborock S5 Max has an efficient cleaning pattern. It saves battery energy in narrow spaces, thus finishing cleaning about 20% faster. The S6 and S5 Max follow a lengthwise path in long corridors and wide rooms.

App Features

If you are familiar with the Roborock or Mi Home app, you will not see many new features except for the advanced scheduling and more mopping options. The S5 Max supports both apps.

It has the same start/stop and manual control. You can also track the robot's movements in real-time. Zoned cleaning is similar to the room cleaning, but you can't schedule the robot with drawn zones. When you draw a rectangle, you make the robot clean within it.

The app allows setting no-go zones and barriers by drawing a rectangle or tape depending on the shape of the zone (the left pic). Also set zoned cleaning to make the robot clean within the area (the right pic).

No-go zones or no-go barriers keep the robot of specific areas. Barriers look like tapes and are ideal for areas where a rectangle can not be placed. The no-go zones are ideal to set around cluttered areas or where you have many cords.

What is the difference between no-go zones and barriers? No-Go Zones come in a rectangle shape and are limited in terms of changing the shape while no-go barriers are tapes which you can set depending on the shape of the zone you don't want the vacuum to go to.n cleaning history, you can see how well the robot cleans whether it covered the whole area or not.

Selected room cleaning

Select the room you want the robot to clean. Customize suction power and water level for every room.

When the robot creates a map, it automatically divides it into separate sections (rooms). If you don't like the way your rooms look on the map, you can merge or divide sections. Once every room is set, you can choose which one to clean through the app. If you don't want to vacuum a guest bedroom, you can make the robot clean the kitchen and living room only so it will not go clean the whole place. There is also an option to schedule the robot to clean a particular room. This feature is presented in the Roborock S6 and lacks in the Roborock S5.

Aside from understanding rooms location, you can also set cleaning zones, the place where the robot should clean, and as we said before, no-mop/no-go zones to keep the machine off some areas.

Scheduling

So the S5 Max scheduling is the most extended among all of the robots I have tested. The things you can do with the timer:

  • Set "Start" when you want the robot to work
  • Choose when to repeat (once, everyday, weekdays, weekends, custom). The custom option allows choosing certain days when the robot should clean.
  • Clean mode. There are two options: to set cleaning mode and water level manually or use that customized settings you did before with water level and cleaning modes chosen for each room.
  • Select a room to divide. It allows you to set a room or a few rooms to clean. When picking the room, it already has water level and cleaning mode for each room if you customized it before. If you did not, you would be capable of tapping on the rooms you want the robot to clean and choose the right water level and cleaning mode in the "clean mode" settings.

In short, you can do almost everything with scheduling: choose which room to clean, only mop or sweep there, set water level and cleaning modes, and so on.

I customized the whole place, so it is easier to set a timer now. In my case, the charging dock stays in the room with carpets so I can set no mopping there and make the robot start mopping when it is in the kitchen or corridor, but since the mopping cloth will be wet there is no reason to set no mopping in that room because when the robot is returning to the dock it needs to go over the carpet, and it will be wet anyway. As a solution, I can change the room with no carpets for the dock, and in this case, the Roborock will sweep first and then mop the other rooms. When it is returning to the dock, it does not make my carpets wet. So if you have carpets, think of where the robot should clean first if you want it to avoid the carpeted area when mopping.

Multimapping

You can merge and divide zones (left pic). Multimap management (right pic)

The Roborock S5 Max is capable of saving up to three maps and it is still in beta and hopefully, Roborock will update the whole multi-floor feature so it will be easier to use the S5 Max in multi-level houses.

Currently, there are three maps available to be created: current (Map1), manually backup (Map 2), and automatically backup (Map 3).

The manual map is saved after you setting no-go zones there (when you manually edit rooms or no-go zones), the backup automatically creates a map after the robot runs around the whole place and finishes cleaning on its own.

So when you let the robot run the first time, it creates a map1 (current) and backup (map 3). If you set no-go zones, the map2 (manual) is created.

Basically, if you have a two-story house, and one of the floors have carpets or zones, you don't want the robot to go, you set no-go zones and it will create the Map2. If you run the robot there, all three maps will look the same (since the first and third map are always the same), but if the robot and dock are downstairs where you don't need to set limited areas, the Map2 will be different (the upstairs map with created no-go zones). If you edit rooms downstairs, it will recreate the Map2 and you will have all three maps the same again.

So if you want two different floor plans for two levels, you should keep one without editing, and one with no-go zones set.

To make the robot recognize its location, place the dock (and the robot) to the floor you want the robot to clean, choose the map you need, and start it from the dock. The map will be created when the Roborock finishes cleaning by automatically docking itself.

The Roborock S5 Max is suitable for multi-story houses

The multi-mapping management is not complete and still has room to improve but if you don't have a need for setting no-go zones on one floor, the current version will work just fine.

Firmware updates

Roborock works on its app, improves it and fixes bugs. You will constantly receive updates. When there is a software/firmware issue, a new update would be released as soon as one is discovered.

Customer support

A few words to say about Roborock customer support. If you have any issue, you can contact the company via email:

  1. US SUPPORT: support@roborock.com
  2. EUROPE SUPPORT: support@roborock-eu.com

Normally Roborock responds quickly. If you have any questions about the product, feel free to contact them.

Accessories

So far there are no extra accessories for the S5 Max available to buy but you can use some from the S4 or S6. You can either buy additional accessories on Gearbest, Amazon or Aliexpress. Gshopper Lifestyle Store is a Roborock’s authorized retailer and is safe to purchase from.

The main cleaning brush is the same that is used for the S4 and S6. You can actually get the one from the S5 too but it does not have an ability to be disassembled so I prefer the one from the S4 and S6.

The side brush is made of rubber, which means you can also use one from the S4 or S6.

All Roborock models use the same washable HEPA filter so you can get one suitable for any model, they all are the same.

The main brush cover is also interchangeable for all models.

For those who want to use magnetic tape, you can get one separately too (supported by all models).

Where to buy additional accessories:

  1. Aliexpress
  2. Amazon

Warranty

Warranty depends on where you purchase the product. The official customer support response is:

«Customers could return the device for a refund within 30 days if purchasing from our official Amazon store. The device covers a 1-year warranty for free repairing or replacement.

If bought from other platforms, we suggest you contact the seller for warranty service. As the manufacturer, we could provide customer technical support and the seller is responsible for the warranty. It is because we have an agreement with our first-class official distributors when we sell devices to them that the warranty of the product is provided by sellers. We appreciate your understanding.»

Cleaning performance

The Roborock S5 Max delivers 2,000 Pa of suction. It climbs an obstacle up to 20 mm (0.8 in) which makes it suitable for thicker carpets. The robot is able to recognize carpets. It boosts suction power once it is stepping on carpet providing the best pickup.

With a disassembled cleaning brush, the S5 Max is ideal for pet owners; the roller is easy to maintain.

Because of the new mopping system and a 290 ml water container, the latest Roborock covers a bigger area and is more suitable for light jobs or heavier messes but do not expect it to remove stubborn stains though it is better at mopping than the previous S6.

I have a low-pile carpet, and medium-pile carpet, which is not shaggy. The Roborock S5 Max did not have any issues with running over these carpets and left them completely clean.

The S5 Max can easily cross over a 1.5 cm / 0.59 in carpet
The S5 Max can easily climb onto a 1.5 cm (0.59 in) carpet

It is not as quiet as the S6 tho, so if you want a more silent robot vacuum, might have a look at the high-end Roborock S6. But it is also not as loud as the Roborock S5 and is much easier to the ear than the older model.

If you run the Roborock every other day, it can replace vacuuming with your traditional cleaner.

Because of strong suction and the cleaning brush that has detachable tips, the Roborock S5 Max is suitable for pet owners, but you will most likely need to empty the dustbin and clean the brush after every cleaning cycle.

A pick-up test on a middle-pile carpet shows that the Roborock S5 Max cleans carpets as good as its predecessors.

I don't have pets but have long hair that is everywhere, and it ends up in the dustbin after cleaning. It takes a few seconds to clean the main brush and empty the bin, which I do after every cleaning session anyway, even if the dustbin is not full. The cleaning brush always has hair tangled tho. There is not that much hair clogged but still better to be removed.

Also, do not forget to wash the filter since the clogged filter causes weaker suction.

Hi and a happy new year!

I've ordered the S5 max about one month ago and today has arrived the S6 (obviously, they made a mistake)! Here in Greece, the price of the S5 max is about 400 euros and of the S6 is about 460 euros. I' ve read almost all your article, but i want to ask you: do you believe is it worth to wait about 2 months to replace the S6 for the S5 max?

Thanks in advance.

Jake ⋅ 3 years, 10 months ago #

From all I gathered, S5 MAX is a newer and better all around performer if you need mopping and vacuuming combo. It shares hybrid design of Chinese P5 (Sensors/hardware design) and T7(E-tank/rubber bumper) from what I can see and isn't available in China. Its a "Global model" since the rest of the world didn't get the regular T7 which is the "upgrade" to the former T6/S6. There is a global T7 PRO, but its rebranded as the S6 MAX V everywhere else and comes with a slower charger and downgraded floor mat compared to the Chinese variation.

IMO, the S6 is a more premium design (sensors/adaptive pathing), but its also older and may perform worse in absolute objective testing. S6 is generally quieter since it has a muffled vent where it exhaust air. The S6 also comes with more accessories and the better/faster charger that comes on all "high end" Roborocks in china. The floor mat is also thicker and movable unlike the newer stuff released within this year (requires using double sided tape to secure).

The S6 shares no mop zones with the S5 MAX/S6 MAX V, but the tank is obviously gravity fed. All the other global Roborock models with water tanks do not support this feature.

Thats My 2c.

Natalie probably knows more about hands on differences though.

Natalie Red ⋅ 3 years, 10 months ago #

Jake, I don't have to respond any more since you covered the main aspects haha

Jake ⋅ 3 years, 10 months ago #

Lol Sorry. Kinda crash coursed internal hardware differences over the past month.

Maybe I should be write a guide to illustrate the internal differences outside of specific tuning per model. There's some really interesting stuff in regards to generational improvements.

No need to say sorry, respond to any kind of a comment you can if you wish, we all like it :)

Hi Bill, happy new year!
Shame there was a mistake. So from my point of view, the S6 is better if you are not going to use mopping as often. It is quieter, in my opinion, has a better build quality, and includes more accessories. The S5 Max has an upgraded mopping system with an electronic water tank and more pressure to the ground. The tank is also bigger than the S6. The electronic water tank means you can set water level control in the app. The S6 water tank has a manual switch for those who are not going to use the app as much.

The S5 max also has customized settings for each room meaning you can set water level and cleaning mode for each room. In my experience, I rarely use this option.
As to the tank size, I use the Roborock S6 MaxV which has the same mopping system, and after cleaning my 70 square meters apartment, there is still 150 ml of water left in the tank.

To sum up: if you have a big area of hard floor to mop and you know you are going to use mopping every other day, the S5 Max probably would be better. For vacuuming purposes and occasional mopping, the S6 is just fine.
If you are going to use the bot every other day you would probably not see the difference between the two.

Does that help?

patrick ⋅ 4 years, 3 months ago #

Hi, my house has many steps to different zone (such as living and dinning and kitchen). 1) Can the S5 max perform the vacuuming (climb the 2-3cm steps?) to reach the next zone?
2) If I wan the S5 max to clean Level 2, can I bring it to Level 2 and start the vacuuming operation?

Natalie Red ⋅ 4 years, 3 months ago #

Hello Patrick.
The crossing ability of the S5 Max is 2cm max, anything that is higher might get troubles climbing for the robot.
If you want the robot to create a map of the level 2, you bring it to the level 2 and start cleaning. When it finishes cleaning it will stop and alert. Then it will ask you to save the map. If your floor is not too big and you sure the robot can finish cleaning on one charge, you don't need to move the charging station upstairs.

Best,
Natalie

Hi there,

I own a Alphawise V10, the robot works very well. The only problem is that when is mopping tile floor, sometimes he looses traction and is unable to continue the mopping.
I was wondering if the S5 Max has the same problem?

Best regards,
Sérgio

Natalie Red ⋅ 4 years, 6 months ago #

Hi Sérgio,
I haven't notice any issues with the S5 Max when it's mopping :)

nanana ⋅ 4 years, 7 months ago #

Roborock mentions that next generation model(s7) will support multy stories room.
I am not sure that they will apply the funtion to old models.

Elaine ⋅ 4 years, 8 months ago #

Your comparison chart needs to be updated. I own an S5 and with the latest firmware update I see separate room recognition in my app.

Natalie Red ⋅ 4 years, 8 months ago #

Hi Elaine, thank you for noticing. You are right, I needed to change it, the comparison table is fixed :)

Dagmar ⋅ 4 years, 9 months ago #

Hi,

I would like to ask you about single mopping mode. I've just read this info - look at the amazon link

Is it true or is there any update in app that allows the only mop mode or only vacuum mode?

https://www.amazon.com/ask/questions/Tx287ZZU7PP2108/?source=allQuestionsPage

Thanks

Natalie Red ⋅ 4 years, 9 months ago #

Hi there, there is no way for the S5 Max to run in a single mopping mode. You can either choose only vacuum mode or mopping with "silent" suction mode.

Bogdan ⋅ 4 years, 9 months ago #

Hi Natalie

Thanks again for help!

I have a young daughter who plays around on the floor. The house is generally clean. I do not really need a lot of mopping power. I mop just to disinfect the hardfloors. So I was hoping to get the robot to do it for me. I got the S5 Max (ordered, but still on its way) because everybody was praising it for the better mopping. Which I agree is the case, but plain water is not sufficient for me. I really wish Roborock would sell some compatible detergent/disinfectant. I will send the S5 Max back and will get a plain S5. I will use disinfectant and I prefer to replace the filters or the tank on the S5/S6 than the pump and who knows what else on the S5 Max.

Thanks again for the help!
Bogdan

Bogdan ⋅ 4 years, 9 months ago #

Hi Natalie

I was wondering if it's possible to install the s6 water tank/pad support to the s5 max. I know s5 max has another, bigger water tank and a pump driven water dispenser. But the manual for s5 max says that only water can be used. I want to use disinfectant. I also know that for s6/s5 the manuals say to use just water, but i think that, for s6/s5, except for the 2 wicks nothing can really break if I use something else and they are easily and cheaply replaceable. So, if it fits, i want to buy a s6/s5 water tank and use it with detergent/disinfectant and use the s5max tank and mop with pure water.

Thanks in advance for the reply.

Hi Bogdan,

You can not use the S6 water tank with the S5 Max because of the different ways of the build. If you look closer, you will notice that the S6 container does not have openings that would allow water from the S5 Max water tank to drip right to the pad while the original S5 Max pad has these.
You can see the difference here:

On Reddit, many people claim they use some detergent with the S5 and S6, but I would not recommend it for the S5 Max.

Natalie

Bogdan ⋅ 4 years, 9 months ago #

Hi Natalie

Thank you so much for the answer!

I've ordered a S5 Max and was hoping I can use some detergent/disinfectant for mopping. My original idea was to use the S5 Max water tank and mop pad with just water to avoid damaging the pump and to use the S5/S6 water tank (filled with detergent) to clean/disinfect. When the S5/S6 tank would be on, the S5 Max water tank would be empty. So it does not matter if the holes are not there. But for this to work, the S5/S6 tank should be able to physically fit the S5 Max. I now understand this is not the case. Thanks again for the help! I will send back the S5 Max and will get an S5. I do no have much use for a plain water mop. For S5/S6, if detergent is used, the worst thing that can happen is for the 2 filters/wicks to break. But they are cheap and easy to replace.

Thanks again!
Bogdan

Natalie Red ⋅ 4 years, 9 months ago #

Ah I see now. The S6 water tank is bigger than the S5 Max pad and can't fit to the robot (just tried it, didn't work). I must say that the S5 mopping is worse than the S5 Max, it would basically be dragging the wet cloth around but if you do not try to replace manual mopping, it should work just fine. I would suggest getting the S5 Max for those who don't want to mop (manually) that often.

With the usage on multiple floors, you have the following:
1) Map 1 (current - created as cleaning happens)
2) Map 2 (created when map is edited)
3) Map 3 (created once cleaning has finished)

So you map and clean your upstairs, and edit your no-go zones - all three maps are now the same.
You then take the robot downstairs, delete the current map and it will map from scratch, so once cleaning is complete, maps 1 and 3 are the downstairs and map 2 is the upstairs.

My question though; is if I then want to clean upstairs again, I restore from map 2, but surely once it has finished cleaning it will change all 3 maps to upstairs? So you will have to remap downstairs every time?
Or am I missing something?

Natalie Red ⋅ 4 years, 9 months ago #

Hi Henry,
well, yes, technically you are correct. This option is still in beta and a bit challenging to use. Unfortunately, I do not live in a multi-story house and can't test it myself but as far as I know, the edited map is always the same, once you set no-go zones, this map is always can be restored while the current and backup maps change depending on where the robot cleaned.
But again, I can't confirm myself since I don't have two floors to test this feature.

Henry C ⋅ 4 years, 9 months ago #

Thanks Natalie. I played around with it a bit more but yes; it looks like you just have to re-map the 2nd floor each time - but at least one map can be saved.

My house is split-level so although it's 2 floors, there are 4 actual levels which makes this quite challenging...!

Hopefully they will develop this into a full multiple maps feature.

Natalie Red ⋅ 4 years, 9 months ago #

Glad to hear you confirmed this. I do hope Roborock will implement this as soon as possible :)

Kathleen ⋅ 4 years, 10 months ago #

I received the s5 max for christmas. I would agree it is great at mopping! It was so nice to tell it to clean the kitchen after my dog tracked mud all over. It is also pretty quiet! It does a good job vacuuming as well.

Now, my complaints. This is my first vacuum with the sensors so I do not know if this is a common problem (me eufy 11 had no problems with my carpet). I have two area rugs, both under the two cm. The one it climb onto at all. The other sets off the cliff sensors and it won't move. Roborock (who has had helpful customer service) said its because of the carpet colors (grey). The only way to fix the cliff sensor issue is to cover those sensors.

Is this a common problem with this type of vacuum? I feel like if my $150 vacuum can climb my carpet a $600 one should!

Michael ⋅ 4 years, 10 months ago #

A black or dark carpet doesn't reflect infrared light from the cliff sensors and the robot thinks that this is a cliff and avoids this area. I've seen the same behavior in all robot vacuums I've tested since they use the same infrared cliff sensors. Even expensive Roomba models have such problems. I've never tested Eufy, maybe they use some other type of cliff sensors, I also know that Neato Botvac D7 works with dark carpets, but unfortunately, all the Roborock models have the same issue with black floors/carpets.

Natalie,
can I use the disposable mops of the S6 on the S5Max? do I need an adapter?
Very well done review and video, I have bought the S5Max after seeing your articles!
Marco

Natalie Red ⋅ 4 years, 11 months ago #

Hi Marco,
I have tried attaching the disposable mops of the S6 to the S5 Max and it fits perfectly. You can see it on the pictures down below.
On the first pic, the wipe is attached to the S6 water tank; on the second pic - to the S5 Max mopping pad.

The Roborock S5 Max comes with an EU plug. Thank you, would love to hear your experience with the S5 Max :)

Natalie

Marco ⋅ 4 years, 11 months ago #

Thank you Natalie, my question about the adapter was referred to the mops (as I saw store selling the disposable mops with an adapter, probably it is needed for the S50).
So far I am really happy with my S5max, it is the first robot so I cannot make comparisons, but impressed by how gentle it is when navigating around the house and how whell it gets around obstacles.

Natalie Red ⋅ 4 years, 11 months ago #

Indeed, the Roborock robots are the best in terms of navigation and how gentle they are towards furniture.
I actually know nothing about an adapter for the disposable mops, didn't know it needs one :)

Sorry... third and final question....

According to this video the OZMO 950 does a much better job regarding thresholds vs. the Roborock S6 (this is @ the stated 2CM height spec). Can you let us know how well the S5 Max deals with traversing over thresholds?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vGjhT2qMM6M

Natalie Red ⋅ 4 years, 11 months ago #

Hello Malcolm,

I have tested most of the Roborock robots and never had an issue with it crossing a threshold but I really don't have very high thresholds as well. I used it on a 15 mm (0.6 in) plank and high-pile carpets and all of them except for the S4 did well.
Have a look at this video. In the comment section, the user says a Roborock works better on high-pile carpets than the Ozmo 950 but the Ozmo does handle thresholds better.
The Roborock S5 Max has the same climbing ability as the Roborock S6 but if you don't have really tall obstacles, it should handle them well.

Natalie

Malcolm Smith ⋅ 4 years, 11 months ago #

Also, one more question. How are multi-story floors handled with the Roborock app and robot? Do you need two docking stations (one on each floor) so that the robot can recharge when necessary? Would the robot automatically know which floor its on by which docking station it is in? I haven't found a lot of reviews discussing how these robots deal with multi-floor situations. Thanks.

Natalie Red ⋅ 4 years, 11 months ago #

The multi-floor feature is in beta and might not be as good as other top-level models are.
To make the robot know where it is, you should manually choose the map you need in the app before starting the robot.
You don't necessarily have to buy two docking stations but you should be aware the robot returns to the dock when it finishes the job, otherwise if you manually move it upstairs to dock it you might not have the cleaning cycle in the cleaning history.

Malcolm Smith ⋅ 4 years, 11 months ago #

Which product has the best multi-story capabilities?

Natalie Red ⋅ 4 years, 11 months ago #

I didn't test the latest Roombas but I believe they are one of the best. It is able to recognize its location when placed downstairs manually (or at least this is what the company claims).

Malcolm Smith ⋅ 4 years, 11 months ago #

Natalie,

Thanks for all of your considerate replies to your readers. I'm very interested in reading your S5 Max review. I was wondering what sort of extended warranty one could expect to get when purchasing from GrearBest. I know there was a big sale over @ Amazon for the Deebot 920 during Cyber Monday (for $349) that many jumped on. There was also the option of getting an extended 3 year warranty for $60 more. From what I can see almost all of these cleaning robots come with a one year warranty. Any thoughts on where and how to get an extended warranty? Thanks again.

Natalie Red ⋅ 4 years, 11 months ago #

Thank you :)
I am contacting Roborock and will let you know once I get a response.

Natalie Red ⋅ 4 years, 11 months ago #

So here what the Roborock answer is:

"Customers could return the device for refund within 30 days if purchasing from our official Amazon store. The device covers 1-year warranty for free repairing or replacement.

If bought from other platform, we suggest you contact seller for warranty service. As the manufacturer, we could provide customer technical support and seller is responsible for warranty. It is because we have agreement with our first class official distributors when we sell devices to them that warranty of product is provided by sellers. We appreciate your understanding."

Bent ⋅ 4 years, 11 months ago #

Can I use the same spare parts for S5 Max as for S6 - or do I have to buy special spare parts for S5 Max?

Natalie Red ⋅ 4 years, 11 months ago #

Hi Bent,

The S5 Max dustbin does not fit into any of the Roborock I own (S4, S5, S6) but you can use the same filter in all of these models.
The cleaning brush is also can be used in all of them.
The side brush is identical too.

Basically, you can use all of the spare parts of the S5 Max with the S6 but the dustbin.

Best,
Natalie

Bent ⋅ 4 years, 11 months ago #

Thanks Natalie,

I just ordered the S5 Max, and I started to think about how soon I will need the spare parts. What is the normal cycle time of brushes, side brushes etc.?

Kind regards, Bent

Natalie Red ⋅ 4 years, 11 months ago #

It depends on how often you are going to use the robot and how big is your house.
I personally have never bought spare parts for my robots but I don't really use my 360 S6 that often because I get to test other models from time to time.

But keep an eye on the filter, it's washable so it does not need to be changed as often but once the app tells you it should be replaced, do it.

Natalie

Petter ⋅ 4 years, 11 months ago #

Hi!

I have ordered the regular Roborock S5 but am now a bit torn as to whether I should pick it up or go for another model instead. Do you think I should wait for the S5 Max or perhaps get the Viomi V2 instead? I heard the Viomi has some app issues but surely they must be fixed by now? Also, will Max have the same cost as regular S5?

I live in an apartment of 65 square meter. Admittedly I hate cleaning so it would be awesome if by robot could help me do the mopping as well and not only the vacuuming, although vacuuming is obviously something you have to do more often.

Not sure if it matters but my market is Sweden by the way.

I’d very much appreciate a response. :)

Natalie Red ⋅ 4 years, 11 months ago #

Hi, Petter

I don't know what the price for the S5 Max will be in Sweden, but I also think it will be more expensive than the Viomi or the regular S5.
The Viomi still does not have all the issues solved by now.

I would recommend going with a Roborock anyway, it has better customer support, a user-friendly app and so on.

When choosing between the S5 and S5 Max it all depends on what you personally want your robot to be capable of doing. If you want better mopping, go with the S5 Max, if you are going to use room cleaning, go with the S5 Max too. If you want a better experience in terms of noise level, go with the S5 Max because it's not as loud.

If you don't want to spend more, the S5 is still a great option to get. It might lack some features and does not have an advanced mopping system but it does a great job on carpets too.

Hope that helps
Best,
Natalie

Hi Natalie,

I have read that the Ozmo 950 is a better all round robot vac than the Roborock S5 Max. It does every thing better in every way. Would you still recommend the S5 max over the Ozmo 950?

Your recommendation and advice is much appreciated.

Thanking you in advance.

David

Natalie Red ⋅ 4 years, 12 months ago #

Hi, David

I can't say for sure which one is better since I've never tested the Ozmo 950, so my opinion can be a bit biased. I've read a few opposite opinions about these two robot vacuums compared. From what I've heard, Roborock has better customer support (check comments under this video https://youtu.be/yzw0kadBoH8, this guy owns the Ozmo 950 and Roborock S6). I can confirm, I've contacted them via email a few times and received a response within an hour.

I received the Roborock S5 Max yesterday but didn't test it yet. I don't think there is a huge difference between the Roborock S6 and S5 Max in terms of cleaning performance and navigation, except the mopping feature. I'll write a detailed comparison of the S6 and S5 Max.

Malcolm Smith ⋅ 4 years, 11 months ago #

Natalie,

Will you be creating a real use review of the Roborock S5 Max? If so, when do you think it would be available?

Natalie Red ⋅ 4 years, 11 months ago #

Hi Malcolm,
Sure! I'm already working on it. I'll update this article with a hands-on review until the end of the week. I've already tested the mopping feature in this video. I also want to compare how good is it on carpets compared to the Roborock S4/S6. I don't think that it is very different in terms of suction or cleaning performance compared to the Roborock S6, it has the same 2,000 Pa suction motor and roller brush, so probably the significant difference is only in the improved mopping feature. The app features look pretty similar to the S4 and S6 models (except separate no-go zones for mopping and the ability to change the water level in the app).

Malcolm Smith ⋅ 4 years, 11 months ago #

Natalie,

Thanks for the update. The Roborock 5 Max looks to be very attractive especially with it's larger water bin and ability to work on multiple floors (as long as you don't need no-go zones/lines on one of them).

I wish Roborock would catch up with Roomba, Shark and 360 in regards to allowing a high number of maps available for its users. For this reason, I decided to go with the 360 S5 on Amazon. If it doesn't work out I'll definitely give the Roborock S5 Max a shot.

Natalie Red ⋅ 4 years, 11 months ago #

Malcolm,
If you don't live in a big apartment, the S5 would be just fine. The major downside of the S5 is the short battery life, it works up to 30 minutes on Max mode. But if you don't have carpets and not going to run it in high suction settings, you will get longer runtime.

Kelly ⋅ 4 years, 12 months ago #

Any idea how long it takes to ship to US if you buy on Gearbest? Is gearbest a safe site to order from? Also, since the roborock s5max has an EU plug, does it come with an adapter? If not, will buying a standard adapter to make it work in US work fine? Anyone done this? Any reason it wouldn’t work? Hate to spend that much money and have it shipped from far away, and then not work as it says return shipping is responsibility of buyer so worries me. Thanks

Michael ⋅ 4 years, 12 months ago #

Hi Kelly,
According to Gearbest, delivery to the US takes 3-10 days + a few days order processing time. It is pretty safe to order from Gearbest, and they are the official partner of Roborock. But of course, there is some risk that if something wrong with the product, you will need to send it back to China and pay the return shipping cost. You only need a plug adapter, since the robot already supports 110-220V power supply.

Loi Huynh ⋅ 4 years, 11 months ago #

You can buy a US figure 8 power plug from amazon. I am using my Playstation 4 power plug in the meantime.

Hi Natalie,

Thank you for your assistance in making up my mind. I am not going to buy OZMO 930 or Lenovo based on your recommendation. So far S5 max looks good.

Can you please compare S5 max vs Viomi V2 Pro? What do you recommend?
Viomo V2 pro can work in US. Correct? Does it support 110-240V input power?

Thanks.
desai

Natalie Red ⋅ 4 years, 12 months ago #

Hey, desai glad I could help :)

The Viomi V2 Pro is better in terms of mopping cleaning results. Going to be honest with you, I love the way Viomi mops. It really does a great job and is the best mopping robot I have ever tested. Because of the Y-shapes path, it can get rid of stubborn stains instead of just dragging the cloth around. But I am not a fan of their customer and product support because as I mentioned before, Roborock regularly updates its products, even the old S5 receives updates every once in a while.
Since I've owned the Viomi it received a few updates only, the app is still baggy, English is broken and so on... But as a mopping robot, it is a great unit.
And yes, according to Gearbest, it supports 110-240V input power.

You may have a look at the latest Xiaomi STYJ02YM, at least it is a well-known brand, the company supports its products and cares about its reputation.

Again, if you need a mopping robot.

But I still prefer the Roborock tho it might be equal to the new Xiaomi in terms of features but with Roborock I always know I will get an answer to my question shortly after asking when if you get a Xiaomi I don't even know who to contact with.

Best,
Natalie

desai ⋅ 4 years, 12 months ago #

Natalie,

If I understand you correctly, you are saying that S5 Max is very similar to Xiaomi STYJ02YM but you trust Roborock more because of the customer service. Correct?

On a side note just want to confirm that Xiaomi STYJ02YM also support 110-240V input power.

Natalie Red ⋅ 4 years, 12 months ago #

The Roborock S5 Max has advantages but it does not follow a Y-shape path which I find very effective. But yes, you understand correctly, I trust Roborock more :)

The Xiaomi is a good product too, it has good specifications and overall looks good. I will have a chance to test it soon so I can say for sure what is better but for now, I would go for a Roborock anyway.

Thanks for the info about the Xiaomi, going to have it in mind if anyone asks.

Emma ⋅ 4 years, 11 months ago #

Would you choose this or the 360 s7? We have rugs, hard wood floors and furry animals.

Natalie Red ⋅ 4 years, 11 months ago #

Definitely the Roborock. I love the way 360 S7 vacuums but nothing can beat the S5 Max in terms of mopping.

Again, if you don't need mopping that much and want to save a dollar, you can go with the 360 S7, it is a great machine. It also mops but would not be as efficient as the S5 Max in terms of mopping.

desai ⋅ 5 years ago #

Hi Natalie,

I am thinking to buy this robot. I have few questions.

1) Does it have 110-240V input power capacity?
2) Does it simultaneously vacuum and mop?
3) Finally, what are the main differences of this model vs Deebot OZMO 930? What do you recommend? This S5 Max or OZMO 930?

Thanks
desai

Natalie Red ⋅ 4 years, 12 months ago #

Hi, desai :)

1) The S5 Max supports 110-220V input power capacity, but on GearBest, it comes only with an EU plug, so you would need to buy a plug adapter if you have a different type of power socket in your country.
2) The S5 Max dustbin is inserted, together with the water tank in place so it is capable of mopping and vacuuming at the same time.
3) As for the differences between the two I would pay attention to these:

  • The Roborock S5 Max has a better climbing ability which means it is more suitable for carpets and overall does good with thresholds, etc.

  • The S5 Max is also much more powerful which might be not a big deal if you don't have carpets but really makes a difference on carpeted surfaces.

  • The Roborock supports no-mop zones that keep your carpets dry when it's mopping. The Ozmo recognizes carpets too and avoids them but I have heard it does not work as good in real life.

  • ECOVACS is known for its baggy app, it loses maps, and overall works not as smooth as the Mi Home or Roborock apps. Plus, a Roborock receives updates regularly which I can't say for sure about the DEEBOT.

  • The Roborock is quieter. When I say that I mean that you won't really notice it running around while the Ozmo would annoy you when working.

  • The S5 Max runs longer, up to 3 hours on low power settings, and 2,5 hours on balanced mode. If you live in a big house, better go with the Roborock.

  • One thing to keep in mind about the Ozmo - it comes with a suction inlet and main cleaning brush. The inlet is great for pet hair and hard floors while the main brush agitates debris on carpets. The Roborock comes equipped with one of the best brush rollers in the industry. It might be not as good as the suction inlet but it works well on both surfaces and very easy to clean if needed. It overall has good anti-tangle technology, maybe one of the best in the business.

  • The Roborock has a HEPA filter that can be washed with water and is safe for allergy sufferers. The Ozmo has a high-efficient filter which is not true HEPA.
In general, HEPA-type filter has a 99% efficiency rate of capturing particles as small as 2 microns. True HEPA filter up the game with a better 99.97% efficiency rate at particles as small as 0.3 microns. (source). It might not make a difference if you don't have an allergy or asthma but a washable filter is better because when it's clogged, it decreases suction and also, washable filters last longer than non-washable.

Both have water leaking control in the app so you know what level you need to do the job, I would recommend going with max level though. Both supports zoned cleaning, room cleaning, and no-go zones.

To conclude:

The Ozmo 930 is suitable for homes with hard floors and pets. Not good for carpets and allergy sufferers. Also, is not designed for big homes.

The Roborock S5 Max is ideal for big homes with carpets an some hard floor areas to mop, safe for allergy and asthma sufferers, suitable for thin and thick carpets (not thicker than 20 mm (0.8 in) tho).

P.S. As for myself, I would get the Roborock, because you will know for sure, the company supports this product by regularly updating the app, answering your questions fast if you have any, and overall the product is a great value for the price.

Best,
Natalie

Thanks Natalie for detailed very quick answer.

Can you please clarify one more thing for me? S5 max says that it has no mop zones. I have few carpet and rugs in my floor. My entire floor do not have carpet. Only about 10 to 15% of entire floor is covered with carpet and rugs.

1) Is it possible to set up specific 3-5 sections (not rooms) of carpet and rugs to exclude for mopping?
2) When we set up no mop zone, do robot go on these places vacuum but not mop? What I mean is robot will vacuum entire floor but exclude just no mopping zone for mopping. Correct? When robot go for vacuuming on no mop zones, it does not drop water from water tank. Correct?

desai

Natalie Red ⋅ 4 years, 12 months ago #

No problem, glad to help :)

1) Yes, when you set no-mop zones the Roborock knows it should not go there when it mops
2) No-Go and No-Mop zones are separate features. When setting no-go zones, you keep the robot off certain zones either when it mops or sweeps (I have not tested the S5 Max, but I believe I understand correctly). When you set no-mop zones, the robot will not go there while mopping attachments are on, once you remove them, the no-mop zones disappear and the robot can vacuum there. With no-mop zones, the robot will avoid these areas anyways when mopping. Technically, it is almost impossible to make the robot vacuum only, because the mopping pad is wet from mopping anyway so you can't make it stop mopping on carpet even if the water stops dripping on carpet.

Answering your question: if you set no-mop zones, the robot will not vacuum or mop there in any case, it will avoid those zones as long as mopping attachments are on. When it's finishing mopping, you can run it again to vacuum the rugs separately and it will go there if you remove mopping attachments.

I am not aware of a robot that would go on carpet with mopping attachments without having to mop it. Maybe in the future, we will have a chance to buy a robot that can do both: mop hard floors and vacuum carpets at the same time without damping carpets but for now, it's all we have :)

Natalie,

Its me again.

I just saw your new forum post:

Also I saw new listing of this item at Gearbest @ $439 price:

I know that this is brand new item no one has tested it yet but on paper it looks promising in comparison to S5 max.

What are your thoughts? Do you think it will support 110-240V input power and can be used in US?

Natalie Red ⋅ 4 years, 12 months ago #

Unfortunately, I don't know anything about it so far. It looks great but I can't say for sure this robot will be updated regularly, has accessories sold everywhere or good customer support.

It has great specifications but sometimes you have to get into details to know the product.

I would get a Roborock because it is a trusted brand but so is Lenovo... Wish I could say more though. We can wait for a week or so and maybe someone will review it :)

I've just received my S5 Max today and I'm disappointed- mainly due to no support of Mi Home app. In my opinion this is a big issue . Mo Mi Home means no Google Home integration. Moreover Roborock app very is limited with languages.

In general in recommend other vacuums : S5 or S6. This S5 max seems to be budget version with bigger water tank

Michael ⋅ 5 years ago #

Check out this post, they already testing voice commands for the Roborock app. I'm not sure if they are testing it only for Alexa or for Google Home as well. Anyway, I think Google Home support will be added to the Roborock app soon. The Roborock app was released a few months ago, I believe there will be even more features than the Mi Home has.

Danny K ⋅ 5 years ago #

Hi,

I have few questions if you can please help to clarify.
1. Does the 300gm pressure for mopping really help in better mopping compared to 360 S7?
2. Does the rotating brush only spin when the robot is vacuuming at the edges, this was the problem with S6, seems like some battery saving issues? Is it possible to make changes to the power setting such that the brush will spin while it is on?
3. Is it easy to clean the tangled hair on S5 max?
4. It seems that it is only available for shipping from HK, in that case does the global version get exemption from import duties to EU countries?

Best,
Danny

Natalie Red ⋅ 5 years ago #

Helo Danny,

No problem, let me make it a bit clearer for you:

1. I am not sure about the pressure and its performance since I haven't tested the S5 Max but the S5 Max has different water dripping settings which help to provide better mopping results.
2. I have not noticed any issue with the side brush not spinning when used the S6. It boosts spinning speed when goes along walls and corners to provide better pickup and does not spin on thick shaggy carpet sometimes but it does not cause worse performance. I did not see any differences when it does or does not spin on carpet while yes, on hard floor, it makes a difference but again, it works just fine on bare floor.
3. The S5 Max has the same cleaning brush the S4 and S6 does so I would say yes, it is easy to clean the tangled hair, much better than solid brushes I used to see in the Viomi V2 or the Roborock S5. All you should do is use the cleaning tool to tear off the hair and remove the side tips too. Not as good as the Roombas tangle-free rollers but much better than the brushes other manufacturers use.
4. The Roborock S5 Max should be available in the US by the end of the year and I believe it will be in the EU by then as well. Not sure about the import duties things.

Fell free to ask as many questions as you need :)

Best,
Natalie

Hi Natalie!
I'm interested in the Roborock S5Max's loudness. Can you help? Different forums have different data, but not much of the same.
I saw somewhere in a picture that it was 74 decibels loud when measured up close.
Possible?
Can you make these measurements?
Thank you very much
István

Hello István,

I did not test the Roborock S5 Max yet. This is what Roborock said about it: "At 58dn, the S6 is up to 50% quieter than the S5, which is at 62db if measured at 1m distance, while the S5 Max is at 60db on the same measurement. "

Best,
Natalie

Sorry but how is this noise improvement calculated to result 50%? Between 62 and 58 there are only 4 db difference. How can 4 db represent 50% improvement over 62? 50% means half from the initial value. So 62/2=31 not 58.

Natalie Red ⋅ 5 years ago #

Hi John,
Good question. The decibel (dB) is a logarithmic unit, so there is no linear correlation between these numbers. For example, the sounds associated with jet planes measure 120-140 dB, but it's certainly tens or hundreds of times louder than the robot vacuum. It's hard to say for sure that there is a 50% difference between the 58 and 62 dB, but at least that is what the manufacturer claims.

David Fleury ⋅ 4 years, 12 months ago #

Decibel are logarithmic scale, a +3dB difference is the same as doubling the amount of sound pressure (yes, a 58dB is twice as loud as 55dB and 4x times louder than 52dB).
So 58dB is around half the amount of sound pressure generated at 62dB (even less actually)

I have read contradictory information on the Internet regarding the ability to save multiple maps on the S5 max, and I cannot see anything related in the official Roborock website. Can you confirm it can save 3 different maps? (I have a two-floor flat). Thanks.

Natalie Red ⋅ 5 years ago #

This is the response I got from Roborock on the multi mapping thing: "The S5 Max and the S6 would both save up to two manual maps that the users have edited, however it is not the same as saving two separate maps for multi-level (we are working on that)."

Pablo S. ⋅ 5 years ago #

We will wait then and see if they add this feature. Thanks!!

I thought the dustbin was bigger then the s6, I thought the dust bin was like the s4 bigger and could hold more dirt?

Natalie Red ⋅ 5 years ago #

I believe because of the bigger water tank, it was harder to build a bigger dustbin so we got what we got with the S5 Max.

Jake ⋅ 3 years, 10 months ago #

I know this is a late response, but its due to the newer location of the motor/fan. The original S5 and S6 have the motor fan on the left side. All the newer roborocks are dead center behind the filter.. Seems to promote better airflow in exchange for a smaller bin.

Makes sense :)

If the S5 Max is available in the United States why is it selling with a EU plug

Natalie Red ⋅ 5 years ago #

The S5 Max is not available in the US yet so it does not come with a US plug, I believe when it will be on sale in the US, it will have a US plug.

Loi Huynh ⋅ 4 years, 11 months ago #

I bought my s5 Max from gearbest and it came with a EU plug, but that wasn't a problem. It's a universal figure 8 plug, so I went on Amazon and bought a white US one that matched with the white s5 Max, or you can just buy a EU to US adapter. I didn't buy the adapter because it would be sticking out about an inch in the wall outlet.

looks like deebot 950 water tank exactly
yes, no mop zone is very useful
water rate control from the app in deebot also nice

João ⋅ 5 years ago #

I'm a bit confused. What does S6 have better than the S5 Max? Or does S5 Max is really an improvement on the S6?

Natalie Red ⋅ 5 years ago #

The biggest improvement in the S5 Max over the S6 is its mopping feature.

1. The S5 MAX has a bigger water tank (280 ml vs. 150 ml).
2. The newest model follows a Y-shape pattern in mopping mode which is more efficient and better at removing stains.
3. The S5 MAX has no-mop zones that you can set so the robot avoids carpets and also no-go lines that keep the robot off some other places. Once the mopping attachments are removed, no-mop zones disappear. The S6 only supports no-go lines.
4. The S5 MAX runs longer (180 min vs. 150 min), more suitable for larger houses.
5. Now you can control water flowing in the app instead of switching the toggle on the water tank itself.
6. You can schedule the S5 MAX to mop in a specific room whenever you want which you can't do with the S6.
7. The new model is more intelligent with the recharge&resume feature. It does not need to charge up to 80% when it's battery runs out of power, the robot calculates how much battery life it needs to finish the job which means you don't have to wait a few hours until it resumes cleaning.

If you think of switching your S6 to the S5 MAX, it might not be the best idea but if you are looking to get the S6 or the S5 MAX, I would recommend going with the latest model. The mopping feature is really better here. I have tried the Viomi V2 with a similar mopping pattern and it is significantly better than any other 2-in-1 robot vacuum cleaner I have tested.
If you live in a big house and feel like 150 minutes would not be enough to cover the whole space go with the S5 Max but I feel like 2,5 hours is more than enough for most households.
But if you don't really need mopping and you will not use it, the S6 is a great choice to go with.

What is difference with this new Xiaomi :Xiaomi Mijia V2 STYJ02YM (2019) ?
The battery is lower but it's seems that is a new model better than S5 max.

Esko Haapaniemi ⋅ 4 years, 8 months ago #

I have read somewhere that both S5 Max and S6 have 180 min working time (depending of used power).

Thanks for this very informative and thorough review. Just ordered S5 Max.

Natalie Red ⋅ 4 years, 8 months ago #

It's hard to measure, officially they both run up to 150 minutes and I was wrong when said the S6 works longer because they both have the same motor and battery and I believe both can do 180 minutes on eco mode.

But I do think the S5 Max is a better value because of mopping and customizable settings. The Roborock S6 is more expensive but it also has an extra filter, extra mopping cloth, and 10 disposable wipes.
Would love to hear your experience with the S5 Max :)

Esko Haapaniemi ⋅ 4 years, 8 months ago #

Yes I can do it. I am supposed to get S5 Max Thursday. For Corona reasons, it is going to be delivered to my car in front of the shop. In Finland prices are just now the same. Both are 499 euros (S6 and S5 Max).

I am going to try it on two floors. Putting the docking unit to both floors. I mean move it before . Did you have a special "plan" how to manage two floors? I mean have you tried after December 2019 to work with two floors?

Do you have a trick to "draw" no-go-zone for a carpet? I'll try black tape to fool S5 Max to think there is a staircase and then find the carpet from the map.

Natalie Red ⋅ 4 years, 8 months ago #

Here you can read a comment about how to manage multimapping. It is about the Roborock S4 but they all have it the same way.
I have not tested this option myself simply because I have nowhere to try it. What has happened in December 2019 btw?
re: drawing no-go-zone. I just set no-mop zones where my carpet is so the robot does not go there in mopping mode or I misunderstood your question?

Esko Haapaniemi ⋅ 4 years, 8 months ago #

It is not so easy to draw no-go-zones by the phone, when you are not able to figure out, where the carpet really precisely is. Black tape could show after cleaning, where the carpet is. Just an idea.

Natalie Red ⋅ 4 years, 8 months ago #

Ah I see. Try it then. Would love to hear how it goes :)

Esko Haapaniemi ⋅ 4 years, 7 months ago #

Tried only mopping without carpets. And no borders set.

Two floors tested, but could not get map. Or it did draw new map, but destroyed after docking. I carried docking station down stairs. Started the robot. It ran over the station and when returning, could not excatly position itself.

Natalie Red ⋅ 4 years, 7 months ago #

The map is being created after you start the robot from the dock and it finishes docking itself by itself without being manually moved upstairs. Try it out, should work just fine.

Esko Haapaniemi ⋅ 4 years, 7 months ago #

I did not quite understand. I have now three maps and they all are same (small modifications each). I moved the dock downstairs and did cleaning there. Then I moved the dock back to the original place upstairs.

Natalie Red ⋅ 4 years, 7 months ago #

Ah I see. You said you couldn't get the map so I figured you might need some suggestions of how to :)

Natalie Red ⋅ 4 years, 7 months ago #

The robot saves three maps (actually two) and only one stays the same (with edited areas). "Multimapping" is quite complicated, you can not have two separate maps. I mean you can, but the first and last one will always be the same so if you run the robot on the floor with edited areas, you will have the identical three maps. It's tricky but can work if you play with it a bit.

Thanks for pointing out! Fixed that :)

Stas ⋅ 5 years, 2 months ago #

There are some mistakes in the chart:
1. Roborock S5 Max has a 280 (not 180) ml water tank.
2. Roborock S5 Max has 14 (not 13) sensors.

Natalie Red ⋅ 5 years, 2 months ago #

1. Thanks, has fixed in the chat.
2. The Roborock S5 Max is equipped with 13 types of sensors including 4 cliff sensors and Lidar.

Stas ⋅ 5 years, 2 months ago #

At the Roborock official website, it is claimed that this robot has 14 sensors.

Natalie Red ⋅ 5 years, 2 months ago #

I have asked and the official Roborock support answered the new model has 13 types of sensors. Besides, I can't find any information about the sensors at the official website.

Natalie Red ⋅ 5 years ago #

I am a bit confused here: do you mean the Viomi V2 or Xiaomi MiJia STYJ02YM LDS Edition?

Our readers complain about the Mi Home app (the Viomi V2 model) which may cause the new Xiaomi as well. It is not stable while the Roborock app is sleek, stable, and complete. The Roborock app also gets updates regularly in case there is a bug that needs to be fixed.

The difference between the Xiaomi and new Roborock:

1. The new Roborock has no-mop lines for mopping and no-go lines for sweeping, the Xiaomi supports no-go lines only.
2. The S5 MAX can be scheduled to mop at a specific time.
3. The S5 Max is smart enough to power up the battery to the level it needs to finish the job, not to 80% as other models do.
4. The S5 Max runs longer.
5. The new Roborock climbs an obstacle up to 20 mm height vs. 15 mm the Xiaomi does which is better for carpets.

Even though some things might be better in the Xiaomi, the app is still raw which you won't experience with the Roborock app.

nico ⋅ 5 years ago #

I mean comparing the S5 max and the Xiaomi Mijia STYJ02YM. the both are very recent and similar. The STYJ02YM has a better vaccum power (2100 instead 2000). the STYJ02YM is new ( August 2019)
