How to choose the right Roborock?
Starting with home size and whether you need mopping or not. Another question is what kind of navigation/mapping is on point.
The Roborock S4 Max and Q5 do not have mopping attachments and are suitable for homes covered with carpets mostly or if mopping is not a concern.
Speaking of navigation and mapping, the E series lacks lots of smart features the S&Q lineups have. It is not suitable for cluttered homes as it would take forever to finish cleaning.
As to home size, all models have the same large battery that is enough to cover a 200 sq m (2152 sqft) area. However, for big houses, I would recommend getting a robot with Lidar as those are less tend to get lost in bigger areas. So the E4 and E5 models are better for small homes. The S series can be used in all homes.
If you have to deal with lots of debris or have a pet, consider getting a model with a self-emptying station.
What do Roborock robots have in common?
- Most of them except for the Roborock S4 Max and Q5 come with mopping attachments and can mop and vacuum at the same time.
- The same goes for carpet identification. The Roborock boosts suction once it happens to clean a carpeted surface (except for the Roborock S4 Max). This option makes battery life more efficient as you don't need to run the robot on max mode. The models run up to 200 minutes which is enough for most homes.
The Roborock S and Q series robots are suitable for big homes.
- HEPA filter. It is safe for those who suffer from allergies or asthma. The filter can be washed with water but we do not recommend doing so too often. Wiping out the dust or vacuuming it with your regular cleaner would be enough.
- Each Roborock can climb an obstacle up to 20 mm tall which means they can be used on medium-pile carpets.
- You can also watch your Roborock cleaning in real time (except for the E series). This makes you understand where the robot has already been cleaned.
- All cleaners resume a cleaning cycle after powering up. Some of them calculate how much power they need to finish cleaning, others recharge up to 80% and then resume. With this option and long battery life, the Roborock cleaners can be used in big houses.
What is the S Series
The S series robots are guided by Lidar. Lidar ensures efficient navigation, allows the robot to work in the dark, and builds an accurate map. These robots are gentle with obstacles having smooth navigation and rarely get lost as the result are better for big houses. Those also save more than one map which makes them suitable for multi-level houses. You can guide the robot to clean a particular room if needed, set no-go (no-mop) zones, or zoned cleaning. In short, everything you can’t do with the E series.
What is the E Series
It is a budget model line. They are gyroscope-guided which means you can’t interact with the map but can see the robot’s movements in real-time (only with the E5). It also means the map is not as accurate but the robot’s navigation is more or less better than those that randomly bounce around. You can’t prevent the robot from going to certain areas, or order it to work in a particular room.
The Roborock E4 and E5 are the only robot vacuums in the lineup guided by a gyroscope.
What is the Q Series
This is a series that includes a self-emptying base yet lacks bells and whistles of the latest S series modifications like object recognition or mopping pad lift. It is a more affordable series with premium features for big homes and those who don't need extra things.
How the Roborock navigates? Mapping abilities
The Roborock E series uses dual-gyroscope positioning and navigation system. They clean in straight zig-zag-shaped lines while systematically incorporating edge cleaning. The gyroscope is not as accurate and efficient as Lidar (LDS) though it is better than random cleaning in terms of battery saving and cleaning efficiency. Gyroscope-based robots finish cleaning 2-3 times faster than those with a random cleaning pattern, and they don't miss any spots. The Roborock E5 can relocate its position on the map when the E4 can’t.
Roborock robots remember your floor plan
The Roborock S series have a Lidar-based navigation system. A robot vacuum with the LDS finishes cleaning ~2 times faster than robot vacuums with a gyroscope and 3-4 times faster than robots with a random cleaning pattern. Lidar-guided Roborock cleaners have the smartest and most accurate on the market so far.
As was already being said, the Roborock robots resume cleaning after recharging. Also, if you manually suspend or move the robot during cleaning, after returning it to its original position, it continues cleaning without repeating the previously cleaned areas.
The Roborock S Series store up to 4 floor maps and are ideal for multi-story houses
The newest models are equipped with a stereo camera in addition to Lidar. It recognizes small objects on the floor calculating their size and distance to avoid them.
In terms of navigation, the Q Series is equally the same as the S series only lacks object recognition so requires more attention to what is on the floor before starting the robot.
In short, the E series is the most efficient in smaller homes while the S and Q series are good for all houses.
Which Roborock is the best at mopping?
The E and S Series (but not the S4 Max) are equipped with a water tank for mopping. The S5 Max, S6 MaxV, and S7 water tanks are always attached and are also the biggest in size which means the robot can mop a bigger area before refilling the tank. If you have a big hard floor area, you’d need one of these models. Those three models also come with a mopping pad that is attached underneath once you want to mop the floor. Those three are the only Roborock cleaners with an electric water tank which means you can control water output via the app.
The E series, S6, and S6 Pure water tank is not electronic. Those are smaller in size and instead of having a pump that allows water out, there is a switch to toggle. With a switch, you have two water output levels.
The mopping system is different for those robots. The S5 Max, S6 MaxV, S7, and S7 MaxV Ultra have a water tank and a mopping pad separately. The E series, S6, and S6 Pure water tank is solid. It is flat and needs to be attached when you want to mop. Because of the design, I believe the S5 Max, S6 MaxV, and S7 tank gets closer to the floor which causes better mopping results. The Q7 has a water tank combined with a dustbin.
The Roborock S7 and S7 MaxV Ultra are the only models on the market that lift up the mopping pad when vacuuming carpets or on the dock. The mopping plate vibrates which helps with removing stains.
To start mopping, fill the tank with water, attach the mopping cloth, and insert the water tank/mopping pad underneath by sliding it until it clicks. In mopping mode, the vacuum also follows a back-and-forth pattern based on a created map.
The Roborock robots are perfect for homes with bare flooring
The models with smaller water tanks can mop for up to 30 minutes. Those that have a bigger tank (the S5 Max, S6 MaxV, and S7) cover up to 200 sq. m. (2152 sqft) depending on water output settings.
Because of the upgraded mopping system, the Roborock S5 Max, S6 MaxV, and S7 series mop better
All the Roborock above the S5 Max lineup S6 (except for the Q5) support no-mop zones. This option allows the robot to know where carpet is located to avoid it. Once the mopping attachments are removed, the no-mop zones become inactive. The S7, S7 MaxV Ultra do this automatically tho.
The Roborock S4 Max and Q5 do not have mopping but are suitable for homes without carpets too.
How powerful is the Roborock?
Most of the models are powerful enough to vacuum low and medium-pile carpets.
Is the Roborock good for carpet?
The Roborock models (except for S4 Max) have intelligent carpet recognition. Once the robot "knows" it is on carpet/rug, the maximum suction is automatically turned on. Standard suction is automatically restored after leaving the carpeted area. The S7 and S7 MaxV have the option of automatically avoiding carpets in mopping mode.
Carpet identification saves battery life as the robot only boosting suction on carpets
Another thing is climbing ability. Since most of them can climb up to 20 mm (0.8 in) obstacles, the robots can be used both on low and medium-pile carpets.
Mi Home App & Roborock
For all the robot vacuums you can do the following things: switch between modes, schedule the robot, start and stop cleaning, watch cleaning history, manually control your robot like a radio car, upgrade the robot firmware, see when the accessories need to be replaced, etc. There is an option to track your robot vacuum in real-time (except for the E4). You can see the vacuum building a map, and where it has been cleaned.
All models can be either connected to the Mi Home or Roborock apps. App features for the E and S/Q Series are different.
The Roborock E4 and E5 can only be connected to the Mi Home. You can't interact with the map but you can see cleaning history and do basic things ie setting schedules, choosing from cleaning modes, etc. These models do not save a created map which means they build one every time the robots clean.
Roborock S and Q Series have additional smart features:
Zoned cleaning orders the robot to clean within a specified area.
No-Go Zones (virtual boundaries) keep the robot away from cluttered areas or areas where it can get stuck.
No-Mop Zones for helping the robot to know where the carpets are so it can avoid them. They become inactive once the mopping attachments are removed.
The difference between the no-go and no-mop zones is that the no-go zones are stable while the no-mop zones activate only in mopping mode.
With Room cleaning, you can order the robot to go to a certain room or two if needed. The latest update brings the S series ability to divide the map into separate rooms. This allows scheduling the robot to work in specific rooms. Room cleaning is handy since some rooms need to be vacuumed more often.
Scheduling. You can set the time and day when the robot should clean, there is also an option of choosing cleaning mode but what is most important, you can set which room it has to clean.
The Roborock S5 Max and S6 MaxV have more options including water output and cleaning mode for each room.
Multi-Floor management. The Roborock S and Q series save up to 4 floor maps.
The S and Q Series are suitable for multi-level houses
Interchangeable parts
Some parts of the Roborock robots can be interchangeable with other models. Those include:
- HEPA filter

What is each of the Roborock robot vacuum cleaners best for?
Speaking of each series:
E Series
The E series uses a gyroscope to navigate around and is the cheapest in the lineup. As a result, those are thinner and fit under most furniture.
Navigation is not as accurate as the S series but good enough for small homes. The Roborock E4 is a great robot if you live in a small to medium house with minimum furniture, have pets, and don’t want to pay more. Mopping attachments are sold separately.
Get the Roborock E4 if you:
- Live in a small house
- Don’t want to pay more
The Roborock E5 is an upgraded version of the E4 with stronger suction and two color options. It has the same dustbin and water tank size, battery numbers, and mapping ability.
The E5 is the only model that comes included with a physical remote control that is also magnetic. It doesn’t have Lidar and is being navigated by a gyroscope and optical sensor but unlike the E4, this model can be tracked in real-time. There are two options, with and without mopping attachments.
Roborock E4 vs. E5 what has changed
- Stronger suction
- Ability to track the E5 in real-time
- Included magnetic remote control
- Two color options
S Series
The Roborock S4 Max is the cheapest Lidar-guided robot in the lineup that also does not come with mopping attachments. This is a great device for those who do not need mopping yet want good vacuuming ability.
The Roborock S4 Max is one of the best robots on the market for $430.
Roborock S5 Max
Roborock S5 Max
Avoids carpets in mopping mode
The Roborock S5 Max does not have as many accessories as other newer models such as an extra filter or mopping cloth. The Roborock S5 Max is the best value for the price, ideal for those who want to have it all, don't care about not having extra accessories, and at the same time don't want to pay more for more expensive models.
Accessory kit
- Charging dock
- HEPA filter
- Cleaning brush
- Side brush
- Dustbin
- Cleaning tool
- Moister-proof mat

- Need a robot that would not leave your carpets wet after mopping
- Have a big area with no carpets
- Live in a multiple-level house
- Live in a big house
- Want a high-end robot vacuum for a reasonable price.
Roborock S4 Max vs. S5 Max
The Roborock S4 Max is a great robot vacuum for all kinds of surfaces but it doesn't mop.
Overall The Roborock S5 Max gives a nicer experience in the mopping area. If you live in a big house with both bare floors and carpets and need better mopping with some extra smart features, go with the Roborock S5 Max.

There is no significant difference between the high-end S6 and S6 Pure. The company represents the S6 Pure as a basic model of the S6 with fewer sensors. It is not as quiet as its predecessor but does have a bigger water tank (180 ml vs. 140 ml). Because of refining some aspects of the S6, the S6 Pure brought the cost down a little.
Roborock S6 vs. Roborock S6 Pure: What has changed?
- Fewer rear cliff-sensors
- Louder than the S6 (65 dB vs. 58 dB on high settings)
- A bigger water tank (180 ml vs. 140 ml)
Roborock S6
The Roborock S6 has the most accessories in the box. The product comes with 10 disposable wipes that can be thrown away after use. This is the only model in the line that has disposable wipes in the box. It has a smaller water tank than other newer models and is not suitable for bigger mopping areas.
The Roborock S6 is an ideal machine for those who want a quiet robot vacuum yet powerful enough to get rid of pet hair and be able to clean carpets.

- Charging dock
- 2x HEPA filters
- Cleaning brush
- Side brush
- Dustbin
- Cleaning tool
- Moister-proof mat

Sees and avoids objects
The Roborock S6 MaxV is the first in the lineup with a dual camera that works in tandem with a powerful Qualcomm processor to recognize objects on the robot's way, calculate their size, and avoid them. You don't have to worry about shoes or power strips left on the floor anymore, the S6 MaxV can handle them.
The Roborock S6 MaxV is the cheapest with object recognition
The Roborock S6 MaxV is a great choice for those who want the most advanced navigation in pair with great cleaning ability as it is suitable for hard floors and low to medium-pile carpets.

Roborock S6 vs. S6 Pure vs. S6 MaxV
The Roborock S6 is the quietest and has the most accessories in the box. If you want a quiet robot vacuum with disposable wipes, go with the Roborock S6.
The Roborock S6 Pure has a bigger water tank and is louder than the S6. It also doesn’t have spare parts and disposable wipes.
The Roborock S6 MaxV has the most advanced navigation. The built-in camera helps to recognize objects making you worry less about the robot get stuck on something. It also has a big electronic water tank and is better at mopping. Along with that, the S6 MaxV has the strongest suction in the family. It is ideal for all surfaces (except for the high-pile carpets), handles pet hair, yet is quieter than most robot vacuums out there. If you want the best, have a look at the S6 MaxV.
Roborock S7
Roborock S7
Best mopping experience
The Roborock S7 is an innovation as a hybrid robot vacuum. It has a big water tank that is able to cover a large cleaning area of up to 200 sq. m. The tank is electronic which means you can control water flow depending on mopping tasks.
The same as the S5 Max and S6 MaxV, the S7 allows customizing cleaning models and water flow for each room. On carpet the robot automatically boosts suction. On max power settings, the S7 delivers 2,500 Pa.
The most significant update is the mopping system. The robot lifts the mopping pad on carpet which makes mopping more efficient and you don’t have to vacuum after mopping. With this feature, the hard floors are going to be mopped and carpets to be vacuumed. The mopping attachment vibrates, you can set the tension depending on mopping tasks.
The Roborock S7 supports a self-emptying bin. The bin will be on sale later on and only available in black color while the robot has two modifications: black and white.
The Roborock S7 lacks a camera but still has lots of other sensors that help to navigate around.

Roborock S7 MaxV Ultra
The Roborock S7 MaxV Ultra is the only model that comes with a multi-featured system. It self-cleans the robot, auto-washes its mopping pads, and auto-refills the water tank.
The robot has strong suction power and long battery life. The same as the Roborock S7, the Ultra lifts up its mopping plate on carpets. So you don't have to vacuum first, and then mop only hard floors.
Aside from all the features, the base also dries out the mopping pad so it's always ready for the next cleaning cycle.
The robot is equipped with a dual camera to recognize objects and Roborock claims this technology is improved compared to the previous, S6 MaxV.

Roborock S7 MaxV Ultra vs. S7 MaxV PLUS
The S7 MaxV Ultra version comes with an advanced self-cleaning base that also refills the water tank and dries out the mopping pad.
The S7 MaxV PLUS is the same robot vacuum but it comes with a self-emptying base that only collects dust.
Roborock S8+
Compared to the S7 series, the Roborock S8 has more power, an upgraded roller system, upgraded wider VibraRise, and rises the brushes in mopping mode if needed (only the S8 Pro Ultra).
The Roborock S8+ has a simpler self-emptying base that doesn't wash the pads or has anything to do with mopping.
Roborock S7+ vs. S8+
- Object recognition the S7+ lacks
- The better and more efficient mopping system
- More power
If you want a better mopping experience and deeper carpet clean, consider getting the S8+. The Roborock S7+ is ideal for homes with hard floors and thin carpets. Both are suitable for pet owners.
Roborock S8 Pro Ultra
The Roborock S8 Pro Ultra is the most advanced model in the lineup. Compared to the S7 MaxV, this robot has more power, an advanced dual roller system, upgraded wider VibraRise, and rises the brushes in mopping mode if needed.
The S8 Pro Ultra is a robot for homes with carpets and pets. It is the most advanced in terms of mopping and is ideal for those who are going to use a mopping feature every other time.
Q Series
The Q series is the rich-featured robot vacuums with a self-emptying dock that lacks some bells and whistles of the "MaxV" models yet still pretty decent and powerful.
The Roborock Q7+ is one of the cheapest in the premium line. It has lots of suction and a big dustbin yet comes with a smaller water tank so is not suitable for users that need mopping to cover large hard floor areas. The robot lacks object recognition like the whole "Q" series does yet is still pretty powerful and feature-rich.
Users that want a self-emptying base and mopping for some small hard floors areas but homes are mostly covered with low-pile carpets. The Roborock Q7 Max+ would be better for medium-pile carpets as it has more power.
What is the difference between the Roborock Q7+ and Q7 Max+
- Water tank. The Q7 Max+ has a bigger electric water tank. The Q7+ has a switch with two mopping modes that has to be toggled manually.
- Dustbin size. The Q7+ has a bigger dustbin so it collects more debris including pet hair.
- Suction power. The Roborock Q7 Max+ has more power and is better for medium-pile carpets.
Roborock Q7 Max
Affordable with a self-cleaning base
The Roborock Q7 Max is an advanced version of the previous Roborock S5 Max. It has the same mopping system meaning it does not lift the pad the way the S7 does. Unlike other models, the Q7 Max has a combined water tank and dustbin. It does not have object recognition and only relies on Lidar when navigating.
So basically it is something in between the Roborock S5 Max and S7+. The robot has all the features of the advanced models yet lacks object recognition and a lifting mopping pad feature. Suitable for those who don't need those extra features but are still in search of a quality robot vacuum with a self-emptying option.

Roborock S7 vs. Q7
The Roborock S7 additionally to the features the Q7 lifts the mopping pad when steps on carpet. Its mopping system also vibrates.
Other than that the two are very similar, they have the same bristles brushroll, a similar self-emptying base, and cleaning mechanics.
Roborock Q5
Affordable with a self-cleaning base for carpets
The Roborock Q5 is a simpler modification of the Q7 but without mopping. It has a standard roller brush with bristles and is not as powerful as the Q7. This is an ideal robot for homes with carpets and those who want a self-emptying option but don't want to pay more for extra bells.
Accessory kit
- Dust bag
- Screwdriver
- Auto-empty dock
- Power cable
- User manual
Roborock Q7 vs. Q5
- Suction. The Roborock Q7 is more powerful.
- Roller brush. The Q7 has a bristles roller while the Q5 has a standard one yet is compatible with a bristless roller too.
- The Roborock Q5 does not have a mopping function.
Roborock Q Revo
The newest Roborock Q Revo is something very new. It has a completely redesigned self-cleaning station and a different mopping system.
Unlike others, the Q Revo uses two rotating mopping pads instead of one and it doesn't vibrate. Tho in mopping mode on carpet, the robot lifts those up to 7 mm. It also has one rubber roller instead of two and object recognition.
The self-cleaning station would clean the pads, dry them out with hot air, auto-fill the water tank, and empties the dustbin on its own.
The robot is going to be available in Summer, 2023. For more information stay tuned!
Frequently Asked Questions
- Can I use a Roborock in a multi-level house?
The E Series does not save a map after cleaning. They can be used upstairs. In any case, the robot will build a new map every time it cleans.
The Roborock S series has full multimap support. They save 4 separate maps for four floors and can freely be used in a multi-level house. You don't have to buy a charging dock for the second floor if your floor is not too big.
- Does Roborock remember where it should clean?
Yes, all models in the lineup create a map of the cleaning area and know where to clean. They do not go over the same areas twice.
- I have two dogs and girls with long hair. Which model should I go for?
The Roborock robots are known for their ability to resist hair tangling or at least be better than most robots in the market.
As someone with long hair, I would recommend going with the ones that have a cleaning brush with detachable tips. This would be the S4 Max, S5 Max, and the whole S6 Series. Also, have a look at the S7.
On the other hand, the E series have a bigger dustbin and hold more pet hair. If your dogs shed a lot and you don't need extra features, the Roborock E4, and E5 would be good. Again, if you don't mind the solid brush. In the end, you always can buy the newer one and switch it with the old one.
If the smart features are important to you, go with the ones I have talked about before.
- Does mopping worth it? If I have a small area to mop do I need a Roborock with mopping?
The S6, S6 Pure, as well as the E4 and E5, come with a water tank that has a switch so you toggle it and let more water out as the robot mops.
The S5 Max, S6 MaxV, and S7 have an electronic water tank that allows switching between water flow via the app. Those two models also have a bit different mopping system that includes a water tank and a mopping pad for better pressure to the ground which causes better mopping results.
If you have a big area of hard floors, we would recommend getting a model with a bigger water tank which would be the S5 Max, S6 MaxV, or S7. Those are the best in terms of mopping.
The others are good too but not as good as those two.
If you don't need mopping at all, consider getting the Roborock E5 or Roborock S4 Max.
- Can I order to clean my kitchen and bedroom by using Alexa?
The voice commands are limited by starting and stopping the Roborock.
- Can I shut off suction and let the robot to mop only?
This option is only available for the S5 Max, S6 MaxV, and S7. You can even schedule the robot to mop only in certain rooms if needed.
- When do I need to use no-go zones?
This option is handy in some areas where the robot might potentially get stuck such as a kid's room or cluttered zones.
- How often should I wash the filter?
We do not recommend washing the filter with water too often but wiping the dust out has to be done as often as possible as it causes suction loss. You can wash the filter about once in two months if you clean it regularly. Let it dry out completely before using it again. It might feel like the filter is not wet anymore, however, make sure it is completely dry.
- Will the Roborock resume cleaning after recharging if my house if big?
Yes, each model has this option. Once the battery runs out of energy, the robot returns to the charging dock, resumes, and then finishes cleaning from the same spot it left off.
- I don't have Wi-Fi can I still use the Roborock with no internet connection?
Yes, the Roborock can work without being connected to the internet but in this case, you are not able to schedule it nor using the extra features such as no-go zones, zoned cleaning, etc.
- How do I say the Roborock to avoid carpets as it mops?
The Roborock S6 Series and S5 Max support no-mop zones. You can set them so the robot avoids carpet areas in mopping mode. Once you remove the mopping attachments, the no-mop zones become inactive. The Roborock S7 has an option of avoiding the carpets in mopping mode or vacuum one with a lifted mopping pad.
- I don't like the way the robot maps one of my rooms. Is there any way to change it without creating a new map?
The newer models allow remapping a part of your house without rebuilding a map completely.
- Do I need to leave the light on if I want the robot to work at night?
The Roborock does not require light to navigate. You can run it at night if needed.
- My kids leave a lot of toys in random places. Shall I remove them before starting the robot?
The Roborock S6 MaxV has a camera and Lidar that work together to recognize objects and avoid them. It does not work with all objects but so far it is the most accurate technology on the market. Even with this model, we suggest removing all things that lay on the floor for better cleaning results.
- Can more than one person use the robot with own accounts? Can I still control it with different devices?
Yes, you can share the device with someone else or add it to different devices separately.
- Can I move the charging dock without having to rebuild the current map?
Yes, the Roborock will recognize the new base location and it does not have to redo a map.
- Is the Roborock suitable for a big house?
Yes, the Roborock robots (except for the E4/E5) run for up to 150-200 minutes and are suitable for big houses. In case, it does not cover the area on one charge, it will return to the base, recharge, and then resume cleaning.
- I have a short gap between my bed and the floor, which model I have to buy that would fit there?
If you don't need extra features, have a look at those that do not have the LDS laser on top. Those would be the Roborock E4 and E5.
- Do I need to run the Roborock a couple of times before it has the map completed?
The Roborock creates a map after one cleaning.
