How to choose the right Roborock?

Starting with home size and whether you need mopping or not. Another question is what kind of navigation/mapping is on point.

As to home size, all models have the same large battery that is enough to cover a 200 sq m (2152 sqft) area.

If you have to deal with lots of debris or have a pet, consider getting a model with a self-emptying station.

What is the S Series

The S series is the Roborock's top-line robots. The top-tier S8 has the things a user would want and even more. Those are the most expensive even though some Qrevo models can compete here too.

What is the Q Series

This is a series that includes a self-emptying base yet lacks the bells and whistles of the latest S series modifications like object recognition or mopping pad lift. It is a more affordable series with premium features for big homes and those who don't need extra things.

What is the Qrevo Series

Qrevo is the new high-end lineup with a different mopping system. It has some additional features compared to the S series yet it lacks some too.

How does the Roborock navigate? Mapping abilities

Roborock doesn't have any robot vacuum with a gyroscope or camera. All of these use LDS; some additionally have sensors that recognize objects to make navigation even more precise.

Roborock remembers up to 4 floor maps which make it ideal for multi-level houses

The best mopping Roborock

Since almost all models have a mopping feature, let's talk about the most efficient robots in the lineup. The Q series does not auto-wash itself and is equipped with either an electric or gravity-fed water tank. Both drag the mopping pad around the floor and don't wash the mop cloth during mopping.

So let's say, the S8+ or Q series is not the best for homes with hard floors only.

Have a look at the Qrevo series if you need a mopping robot

The S7 and S8 models that come with a self-cleaning station are better at this point. Those use a vibrating mopping pad (Sonic technology) which is better for stains and overall is a good thing if you want a mopping robot.

They also raise a mopping pad when the robot steps on carpet so it doesn't use as much water in this area.

The Qrevo series uses dual spinning mops and a FlexiArm design mop (some models). It also lifts the mops on carpet like the S8 series.

Another difference is the water container capacity. The high-end S7 and S8 series' station is equipped with a 4 L clean water container while the Qrevo series has a 5 L container whish is better for bigger homes.

4 l sounds enough but don't forget that your robot washes the mop after and during the mopping session so it uses enough water for one cleaning cycle and you would probably need to refill the container after every use.

So if you are looking for the best mopping robots, this would be any of the Qrevo series since those models have the biggest water container so you don't have to fill it after every use.

Is a Roborock good for carpet?

All models automatically boost suction on carpet which helps to save battery life. Also, those are powerful robot vacuums that vacuum low and medium-pile carpets easily. Another thing is climbing ability. Since most of them can climb up to 20 mm (0.8 in) obstacles, the robots can be used both on low and medium-pile carpets. The latest Qrevo robors step on up to 40 mm obstacle.

Robot vacuums are not suitable for high-pile or thick carpets. Better be using a standard vacuum cleaner for that.

Roborock app

For all robot vacuums, you can switch between modes, schedule the robot, start and stop cleaning, watch the cleaning history, manually control your robot like a radio car, upgrade the robot firmware, see when the accessories need to be replaced, etc. There is an option to track your robot vacuum in real-time. You can see the vacuum building a map and where it has been cleaned.

  • Zoned cleaning orders the robot to clean within a specified area.
  • No-Go Zones (virtual boundaries) keep the robot away from cluttered areas or areas where it can get stuck.
  • No-Mop Zones help the robot to know where the carpets are so it can avoid them. They become inactive once the mopping attachments are removed.

The difference between the no-go and no-mop zones is that the no-go zones are stable while the no-mop zones activate only in mopping mode.

With Room cleaning, you can order the robot to go to a certain room or two if needed. The latest update brings the S series ability to divide the map into separate rooms. This allows scheduling the robot to work in specific rooms. Room cleaning is handy since some rooms need to be vacuumed more often.

Scheduling. You can set the time and day when the robot should clean, there is also an option of choosing cleaning mode but what is most important, you can set which room it has to clean.

Multi-Floor management. The Roborock saves up to 4 floor maps.

Interchangeable parts

Some parts of the Roborock robots can be interchangeable with other models. Those include:

  • HEPA filter
  • Main cleaning brush
  • Side brush
  • Cleaning brush cover
  • Mopping cloth

Q Series

Q series is a budget lineup that covers all the things you crave in a robot vacuum but lacks some bells and whistles like the more expensive S-line does. It includes the Roborock Q5 (4 modifications), Q7 (2 modifications), and Q8.

The Q series does not have object recognition or rising mopping pad features, or even the famous Sonic vibrating mopping pad. Those are the affordable robots for users who want the Roborock's vacuum performance with a self-emptying base.

Roborock Q5 Pro+

Best Value

Roborock Q5 Pro+

Strong suction

Best affordable for homes with carpets

Those models do not have a mopping feature except for the Roborock Q5 DuoRoller which uses a gravity-fed water tank with a switch so it is not as good as a mopping robot but is enough for daily chores.

Q7 Series

The lineup includes a Q7 and Q7 Max+.

Roborock Q7+ vs. Q7 Max+

The Q7 Max+ has stronger suction, a bigger water tank, and better mopping technology. The Q7+ is impossible to find these days.

Roborock Q7 Max+

Best Value

Roborock Q7 Max+

Better for mopping

Compared to the Q5, the Q7 Max+ has a better mopping system

The Q7 Max+ has a bigger electric water compared to the Q5 Duoroller+; uses a single all-rubber brushroll and is not as powerful.

Roborock Q8 Max+

The best in the series

Roborock Q8 Max+

The best navigation in the series

Object recognition and DuoRoller system for carpets and some hard floors

Compared to the Q5 and Q7 series, the Q8 Max+ is powerful, and has an electric water tank, and DuoRoller technology which makes it the best in the series.

To sum up

The Q series is a budget lineup with a lot of power for vacuuming but is not equipped with a good mopping system so those models are good for homes covered with carpets or hard floors but only as a daily routine, not for some tough jobs like removing statins, etc.

S Series

The S series is a top-tier of the Roborock lineup. It has the richest features with the S8 series being the most expensive.

Roborock S5 Max

The cheapest

Roborock S5 Max

Avoids carpets in mopping mode

The Roborock S5 Max is the only one in the lineup that does not support a self-emptying base. A good thing for those who don't have pets or want a basic robot vacuum with a standard charging base.

Roborock S8+

The Roborock S8+ is something in between the budget Q series and the rich-featured S7 and S8 series with auto-cleaning stations. Compared to the S5 Max, the Roborock S8+ is a step up.

Best value

Roborock S8+

Best value

Automatically empties a dustbin's content

The Roborock S8+ has the Q series base with an auto-empty feature. The difference between it and the Q8 Max+ is Sonic vibration technology. The Roborock S8+ raises the pad on carpets and vibrates when mops, the Q8 Max doesn't have these features.

Roborock Q8+ vs. S8+

Mostly the difference would be in the water tank with the S8+ having a vibrating water tank that lifts on carpet and the Q8 having a basic electric water tank.

If you are looking for a better mopping experience, consider getting the Roborock S8+, hovewer, it costs more than the Roborock Q8+.

Roborock S7 Max Ultra

Starting with the S7 series (except for the Roborock S8+), the Ultra models come with an upgraded self-cleaning station.

Roborock S7 Max Ultra

Self-clean, self-wash, auto-fill

The most-featured model in the lineup.

The Roborock S7 Max Ultra is the cheapest self-cleaning robot vacuum in the lineup. The model line includes a Roborock S7 Pro Ultra. The Pro version is made for Europe. The Roborock S7 Max Ultra is less powerful than the S8 series and lacks some things like intelligent dirt detection, auto detergent dispenser, or FlexiArm side brush.

However, you get a premium robot vacuum and save a couple of bucks if you don't need those extra things.

S8 Series

The Roborock S8+ is the most basic in the lineup and the S8 MaxV Ultra is the top-tier robot vacuum. Those are premium robots with exclusive features the others don't have.

Roborock S8 Pro Ultra

The best

Roborock S8 Pro Ultra

Premium model

The most advanced station on the market

The Roborock S8 Pro Ultra is the most advanced model in the lineup. Compared to the S7 Max, this robot has more power, an advanced dual roller system, an upgraded wider VibraRise, and raises the brushes in mopping mode if needed.

The S8 Pro Ultra is a robot for homes with carpets and pets. It is the most advanced in terms of mopping and is ideal for those who are going to use a mopping feature every other time.

Roborock S8 Max Ultra

Starting with the S8 Max Ultra, some models have FlexiArm technology.

What is FlexiArm technology?

FlexiArm side brush technology automatically makes a side brush get closer to the wall and objects.

FlexiArm mopping pad extends the pad when going along the walls for better results.

Those are only presented in the newest models making the mopping experience even better.

The best value

Roborock S8 Max Ultra

Affordable with a self-cleaning base

Best value without extra features yet the robot has everything you might search for

The middle of the three. It has more power than the Pro version yet not as much as the MaxV Ultra. The most obvious difference between the two models (Max Ultra vs. MaxV Ultra) lies in the “V,” which stands for vision. The S8 MaxV Ultra features a front-mounted camera that aids in obstacle avoidance, while the S8 Max Ultra relies solely on structured light for this function.

If you are looking for better object avoidance experience, get the MaxV Ultra, yet the Roborock S8 Max Ultra is a reliable option

Roborock S8 MaxV Ultra

The best

Roborock S8 MaxV Ultra

For carpets mostly

Ideal for big homes with pets and some hard floors areas

The Roborock S8 Pro Ultra vs. S8 Max Ultra vs. S8 MaxV Ultra

  • Suction power
  • Auto detergent dispenser
  • FkexiArm side brush

The Roborock S8 Pro Ultra has a lot of power but is the cheapest of the three. It lacks flexiarm technology, intelligent dirt detection, and an auto detergent dispenser.

The S8 Max and MaxV Ultra station has an auto detergent dispensing feature so the station will automatically dispense a certain proportion of detergent and mix it with clean water. The camera on the S8 MaxV also enables additional features. For example, it can identify stains that require extra attention during mopping and offers more pet-related functionalities, which we’ll discuss shortly.

Those two are similar in features, only the MaxV is more powerful and uses better object recognition technology compared to the S8 Max Ultra.

The Roborock Qrevo is something very new. It has a completely redesigned self-cleaning station and a different mopping system.

Unlike others, the Qrevo uses two rotating mopping pads instead of one and they don't vibrate. In mopping mode when steps on carpet, the robot lifts those up to 10 mm. Also, this Series uses one rubber roller (except for the Qrevo Master which uses two) and has FlexiArm technology.

The self-cleaning station would clean the pads, dry them out with hot air, auto-fill the water tank, and empty the dustbin on its own. The Roborock Qrevo Curv has a new station.

Roborock Qrevo Master

For mopping

Roborock Qrevo Master

New self-cleaning station

New mopping system

Roborock Qrevo vs. Qrevo S vs. Qrevo Pro vs. Qrevo Master vs. Qrevo MaxV

Each gen has stronger suction power starting with the Qrevo making the Qrevo Master the most powerful. All of them use a single brushroll except for the Master modification which uses two.

The Qrevo Pro, MaxV, and Master intelligently recognize dirty areas so they wash and vacuum it twice if needed. Also, those three extend a mopping pad to the wall in the mopping mode and only the Master modification also has the FlexiArm side brush.

Only the MaxV and Master raise the roller brush in vacuuming mode if there is a need to mop a spill.

So the Roborock Qrevo is the most basic model that has all the features but is not as powerful and lacks some extra things.

The Roborock Qrevo S is almost the same but has more power.

The Roborock Qrevo Pro automatically recognizes high-traffic areas to clean them better, additionally using the FlexiArm mop.

The Roborock Qrevo MaxV has brush lifting and an intelligent Voice Assistant.

The most powerful Qrevo Master is the smartest, extends a side brush along the walls and short objects, uses two roller brushes, and as a result is the most expensive in the series.

Roborock Qrevo Curv

Pet-friendly robot (Qrevo Slim, Qrevo Edge, and Qrevo Curv)

When operating, the robot detects a pet and stops; during cleanups takes pictures of your pet that you can download; allows video calling and talking to your pet in two-way voice chat.

Qrevo Slim vs. Edge vs. Curv

Roborock Qrevo Slim

Roborock Qrevo Slim

Roborock Qrevo Slim

Lidar's innovative technology for a shorter body

73 types of objects to recognize

Has StarSight which is the newest mapping technology thanks to which the robot goes under most furniture. Knows the biggest amount of small objects to avoid. It uses the same Dual rollers and lacks the AdaptLift Chassis so it can't go under anything higher than 20 mm.

Roborock Qrevo Curv

The newest

Roborock Qrevo Curv

Upgraded self-cleaning station

Advanced app control

The Roborock Qrevo Curv is the most powerful; has a new DuoDivide brushroll system and an upgraded auto-clean station. The Slim and Curv modifications have AdaptLift Chassis and climb up to 4 cm.

When the base washes the pads, you can choose wash mode, water temperature, and warm air drying duration

The Roborock Qrevo Curv might be the most advanced in the whole lineup.

To sum up

The Qrevo series is close to the S8 series. With premium features, the S8 lineup is a better vaccuming robot, and the Qrevo is a great vacuuming robot with good mopping experience

There doesn’t seem to be that much info on the S6 Pure and the deep discount has me a little concerned that it is being discontinued

Natalie Red ⋅ 3 years, 11 months ago #

As far as I'm aware, the S6 Pure is not going to be discontinued for now

Rachel Suegel ⋅ 3 years, 11 months ago #

Natalie: Wow i don’t know how you managed to create this article. I just ordered the S6 Pure since it seemed to have almost all the features of the S6 Max at a much lower price. I have a one floor apartment with almost no rugs. Mostly flat tile. My biggest wish is the mopping, my matte whitish floor shows dirt quite readily in the kitchen area so mopping is my biggest need. What do you recommend?

Hi Rachel, thank you :) If mopping is your biggest concern I would suggest getting the S5 Max. It has the biggest electronic water tank so it covers a bigger area. You can select water level output in the app tho I'd suggest using it on the highest settings, at least that's what I always do :) I've never tested the S6 Pure so I can't say whether it will be as good as the S5 Max but I did so with the Standard S6. On a daily basis, I would say both are good and you probably wouldn't notice the difference between the two. If your cleaning area is large, you might need a bigger water tank. With the S6 Pure tho, you could fill the tank a few times as it mops.
If you don't want to use the app to switch between mopping modes, you can get the S6 Pure, it has a toggle so you manually switch it on the water tank.

With the S5 Max, you can customize cleaning modes (suction and water level) for each room, so you can set a high level for the kitchen only.

But if you use the robot pretty much every other day, you wouldn't see the difference between the two in terms of performance (except for the water tank size).

Does that help?

Thank you for taking the time..I ordered the S 5 Max. Caught my order just before it shipped. Thanks again.

nice article but i am still confused. is the roborock s55 the s5 max? or they are differrent vacuums? and is s50 the s5?

Natalie Red ⋅ 4 years ago #

Hi there. The Roborock S50 and S55 are a Roborock S5. The second number stands for the robot's color. The Roborock S55 is black; the Roborock S50 is white.
The Roborock S5 Max is an upgraded version of the S5 with better mopping technology, full multiple maps support, a bigger water tank, no-mop zones, scheduling for mopping only etc. The S5 is getting hard to find as it's an aging model.

Height is in cm, not mm. Thanks.

Where is the T7 in this comparison line up? Is it not worth it?

Natalie Red ⋅ 4 years, 3 months ago #

The T7 is a Chinese version, it only works in China and this is the reason why it is not included in the comparison table. The Roborock S5 Max is a similar robot vacuum with 2,000 Pa of suction instead of 2,500 Pa.

Amit Ghosh ⋅ 4 years, 3 months ago #

Thanks, Natalie,
Anyway, specs-wise S6 MaxV looks better than T7.
Very nice and detailed reviews by you.
Amit

Natalie Red ⋅ 4 years, 3 months ago #

Hey Amit, you are right, the S6 MaxV is smarter than the T7 as it has a front camera so the robot can see some objects and avoids them. The T7 lacks this feature. In terms of specifications, they are very similar to the T7 but the S6 MaxV is the most advanced robot vacuum on the market so far :)

Hi I have a E4 model and I love it only thing is I broke the dustbin and I need a new 1 I'm having a hard time finding 1 is there another model that has the same 1 that I can get?

Natalie Red ⋅ 4 years, 5 months ago #

Hi, Ken. Sorry, I don't know which model has the same dustbin. Try to reach out to Roborock customer support, hope they can tell you if you can use the dustbin from other models or suggest where to buy the replacement.

Martin ⋅ 4 years, 6 months ago #

Thanks for this page!

We have the E35 - we bought it because of the lower height (the S series would not have fit under our bed). Might be worth pointing this out as an advantage. It may worth it to include height in the overview table for all models as well.

You wrote that "The Roborock S5 Max and S6 MaxV have the ability to shut off suction power in mopping mode." I think we have this setting on the E35 as well - it is called "gentle" (translated to English) and has a water drop as a symbol. You have to activate "gentle mode" first in the settings of the app, and it will then show up on the main screen alongside silent, balanced, turbo and max.

Natalie Red ⋅ 4 years, 6 months ago #

Hey, Martin, thank you so much for pointing out about the shutting off suction function, I have fixed that. And yes, you are right about the height of the robot vacuum, I have included that to the table too. For some people, it might make a difference before choosing the Roborock :)

Best,
Natalie

Is the S6 MaxV as quiet as the S6? If you put it on another floor, does it matter where it starts, or will it recognize the floor as long as it has a map of it?

Natalie Red ⋅ 4 years, 6 months ago #

Hey there. The S6 MaxV is quiet enough but not as quiet as the Roborock S6 because it has stronger suction. I would say it is in the middle between the S6 and S5 Max.

If your floor is not too big and you know the robot finishes cleaning on one charge, you can put it there without a dock to create a map. Once it finishes, it will return to the same point where it has started. The next time when you put it to the same level, it will recognize its location no matter where you put it. It can not recognize the area if it doesn't have a created map of this floor.

You can read how it works in my Roborock S6 MaxV review.

Dagmar ⋅ 4 years, 8 months ago #

Hi Natalie.

I'm interested in S4. It is made for US. So I don't know if it works in Europe (middle EU, 220V). If it works, which region I have to use in app?

For example when I get china version of robot, then I have to use the region China in the app (or mainland china). Has the S4 the same issue?

Natalie Red ⋅ 4 years, 8 months ago #

Hi Dagmar,
I would not say the S4 is made especially for the US. Such, you can find it on Amazon UK and DE (official Roborock seller). It works without any problems in any European country even if you buy it from the Amazon US, and you can use your region in the app settings. All the Roborock models support 110/220V. Depending on where you get it, there might be a different plug type, but you can use a plug adapter in this case or replace the whole cable (the charging dock has a standard figure 8 cable). The problem may be only if you purchase the Chinese version of the product, however, I'm not sure if the Chinese version of the S4 even exists (there are China locked versions for the S5 and S6, but I haven't heard about the S4).

Steve ⋅ 4 years, 8 months ago #

Updated firmware for S5 has been officially released through the Mi Home app so it now supports 3 maps (current + 2 backups just like the other models) and room recognition/selection. No models support multifloor maps yet.

Natalie Red ⋅ 4 years, 8 months ago #

Ah yes, Steve, thank you for reminding about the latest update. The comparison has been fixed.

Tony Siciliano ⋅ 4 years, 9 months ago #

This was a truly excellent article. I think it's very helpful for people not sure of which model works best for them. I've had an S6 since early January and I have to admit, it has really made housekeeping much, much easier. Do you have an estimated timeline for when the S6 will be able to save two maps, as opposed to a singe map with a duplicate backup map?

Natalie Red ⋅ 4 years, 9 months ago #

Hi Tony, thank you for your kind words :) Agree, with a Roborock life gets easier. Here what Roborock says about implementing multimapping: "We've taken this feature as our consideration in our future update. Please stay tuned."

Steve ⋅ 4 years, 10 months ago #

Thanks for the comparison. Correction, the S5 Max dustbin holds 640 ml (same as S4) and the noise level is 60 dB.

Natalie Red ⋅ 4 years, 10 months ago #

Thanks for your comment, Steve. I've added the noise level. Regarding the dustbin, according to Roborock, the S5 Max has a 460 ml dustbin. I've filled it with water and it holds exactly 460 ml as the manufacturer claims. Probably you have seen this in the latest Vacuum Wars video, but it looks like he just made a mistake.

Steve ⋅ 4 years, 10 months ago #

Thanks. I also reached out to Roborock and they confirmed the S5 Max dustbin is 460ml so you have it correct. Sorry there is conflicting info online.

Natalie Red ⋅ 4 years, 10 months ago #

Yeah, there was confusion about the S5 Max's dustbin :) Thanks for noticing tho.

Federico Zivolo ⋅ 4 years, 11 months ago #

May you add the original Roborock to the list? I'm referring to the pp_440546 article on GearBest. That's not the S5, because I own it and it doesn't support mopping.

Michael ⋅ 4 years, 11 months ago #

Probably you are talking about the Xiaomi Mi Robot. As mentioned in the article, this model was made by Roborock but released under the Xiaomi brand (Xiaomi is an investor and partner of Roborock). This model is not mentioned on the official Roborock website, so we didn't include it in this comparison. Here is a comparison between all the Xiaomi robot vacuums. Xiaomi collaborates not only with Roborock but also with Viomi and maybe other robot vacuum cleaner manufacturers.

Giuseppe Gallo ⋅ 5 years ago #

I have a Roborock S4, that is great, but it is not compatible with Google Home. I suggest to update the article :))

Michael ⋅ 5 years ago #

It supports Google Home and Alexa, but only with the Mi Home app, since the Roborock app doesn't work with voice assistants currently. However, it seems like Roborock already testing Google Home and Alexa skills for the Roborock app, check out this Facebook post.

Giuseppe Gallo ⋅ 5 years ago #

Have you a Roborock S4? Because I have it on Mi Home app (like many other devices) and I linked the Mi Home service to Google Home app, but noone S4 is showed on Google Home app.
Did you manage to do it maybe? I would like it so much!

Michael ⋅ 5 years ago #

I just tried to use the Roborock S4 with Google Home and was not able to find it in the device list. Sorry for the misleading info, I thought that if the S5 and S6 work with Google Home, then the S4 should work as well. Just asked Roborock support about it and received this response:

We are sorry to tell us S4 doesn't support google home at present and we are working to make it support. Hope you can wait with patience.

Giuseppe Gallo ⋅ 5 years ago #

Yes, ok. It matches now :))
I hope they will make it compatible with GH soon.
To be honest, my first request is that the rooms cleaning was possible also through Mi Home scenes. It would be really useful.
Thank you so much for the info you got and shared.

Great review, almost exhaustive.Thank you very much.
All I wanted to know about these Roborock/Xiaomi vacuum robots with almost same shape but different names or codes confused me. In my country,Romania,Roborock S5 is sold by the name of Xiaomi RoboRock 2 and I had to do some research and found nothing really usefull until now.
One more thing I wanted to know,if you are going to update the review sometime may be usefull for anyone who reads the review,if those brushes are intercheangeable,I mean one brush fits all models or each model has it's own kind of side brush, cleaning brush. Is it possible to put the new brush made of rubber and the new cleaning brush that has detachable parts to the older models or not.
Sorry for the long comment and thank you again.

Natalie Red ⋅ 5 years ago #

Hello, Cristian!

Thanks, we try to make less confusion about naming because many people think Roborock is Xiaomi which is not true.
The article updates regularly and thanks for giving an idea of what have I missed here.

I have never tested the Roborock Xiaowa E2/E3, I only had the Roborock Xiaowa Lite which is no longer on the market. Since I don't have it anymore, I'm not sure about this model, as far as I remember, it had the same brush as the Roborock S5.

The Roborock S4, S5, and S6, however, have the same brush except for the S5 which brush is solid and has fewer bristles. You can switch the brushes of the S6 to the S5 if you want to. Same goes for the side brush and filters. The S5 and S6 even can share the same container, the Roborock S4 has a bigger one but the brush and filter fit into other models.

Fell free to ask more questions :)

Best,
Natalie

Fantastically detailed and so helpful; what a superbly constructed analysis.

I have purchased an s50 max as a result!

Thank you!

Thank you for the kind words :)
Glad you went for the S5 Max, should be an amazing model for hardwood and carpet.

Massimo ⋅ 5 years ago #

Salve , volevo chiederti se S5 sarà aggiornato per individuare le singole stanze come gli ultimi robot prodotti. Grazie

Natalie Red ⋅ 5 years ago #

Unfortunatelly, I don't know if the S5 will get the room recognition feature in the near feature.
