Features Comparison Chart

In September 2018 iRobot released the mind-blowing Roomba i7+ with a self-emptying charging base that can hold up to 30 robot's dust bin which set you free from cleaning the vacuum's dust container for about a month. The Roomba i7+ does an excellent job on carpets and bare flooring and is ideal for pet hair and people with allergy and asthma.

Last month, May 2019, iRobot launched the newest model - Roomba s9+. It also has the self-emptying charging base, a camera sensor to map out a cleaning area and a new shape, the Roomba s9+ is not round. The Roomba s9+ is claimed to be more powerful than the i7+. Is it true? Let's compare these two models and see which one will suit your needs better.

Battery life

Since the Roomba i7+ does not have an option to switch between cleaning modes, it works for about 75 minutes in one charge, when the newest Roomba s9+ lasts from 50 up 120 minutes depending on how you adjust the power settings.

Rollers

The Roomba i7+ has double-rotating tangle-free brushless rollers that are designed to be the best for pet hair. The Roomba s9+ has the same brushless rollers only 30% wider.

Shape

As you can see, iRobot decided to produce the new model with a D-shape. All the previous models have a round body and longer side brushes.

Cleaning performance

The Roomba i7+ was one of the best in terms of cleaning performance before the Roomba s9+ had been released.

Thanks to the shape of the s9+, it gets closer to corners and edges and provides much better cleaning performance along the walls.

Also, the newest model has a different side brush; it is smaller than previous generations have, softer, and it has a lower spinning speed which does not scatter debris, especially on hard floors.

When coming to carpet flooring, the Roomba s9+ is a champ. Because of stronger suction, redesigned shape, and wider cleaning rollers, the latest model performs great, providing deep cleaning on high-pile carpet. Even though the previous Roomba i7+ is excellent at cleaning carpets, the newest model does a superb job.

However, the Roomba s9+ struggles a bit with larger debris. It does pick up all the debris, but it needs to do a few paths to do so, which does not happen with the Roomba i7+. We assume because of this; the Roomba s9+ gets closer to carpet providing deeper cleaning.

We are not sure how many Pascals the s9+ delivers, in high power settings it has 22 cfm of power, while the i7+ has 17 cfm. Also, with the s9+, you can adjust the level of suction power when the i7 does not have an option to choose between cleaning modes.

Wider cleaning rollers give the Roomba s9+ a wider cleaning path and also help it to avoid hair tangles.

The S9+ is also better at climbing thresholds. They meant to have the same 20 mm barrier cross ability, but maybe because of the newest shape, the new model is better at this point.

Roomba s9+ vs. Roomba i7+: the differences explained

Speaking about cleaning performance it is more or less clear that the Roomba s9+ does a better job on both: carpet and bare flooring which is not surprising, it does have a 4x more powerful motor (claimed by the manufacturer).  Also, the newest model lasts up to 120 minutes and is more suitable for bigger homes. In terms of mapping, both models have the same technologies, and there are no significant improvements on this side.

However, let's not forget, the Roomba s9+ is about $350 more expensive than the Roomba i7+.

If you are looking for a powerful robot and your home is small and mostly covered with carpets, yet you don't want to spend more - go with the Roomba i7+.

If you want the most powerful robot vacuum on the market that will provide excellent cleaning performance on carpet and you live in a bigger home, consider buying the Roomba s9+.
