Xiaomi Mi Robot vs. Xiaomi MiJia 1S: Is the Xiaomi Mijia 1S robot vacuum cleaner worth buying?
Xiaomi has launched its newest generation robot vacuum cleaner - the Xiaomi Mijia 1S. So far we know a lot about it, the main question is the same: is the new model worth the price? Maybe some improvements are not that good, and you still can go with the Xiaomi Mi Robot? Who doesn't need extra power especially if you have pets and your home is about carpets? AI technology got the newest Xiaomi robot to the next level, it is something Xiaomi released the first time. Have some tea and let's get into the details.
What has upgraded in the latest Xiaomi 1S?
AI recognizing. The new technology helps the Xiaomi 1S to recognize rooms location by identifying the doors that lead to these rooms. Now you can schedule the robot to clean within a particular room at a specific time.
Room cleaning. Thanks to AI technology, the robot is able to identify different rooms. You can make it work in one or two rooms instead of the whole house.
Visual sensor. The 1st gen Xiaomi Mi Robot uses the LDS sensor to create a map. The 1S robot vacuum also has a visual sensor. The LDS sensor and visual sensor work together to create a plan that is more accurate than most of the robot cleaners build. Also, the LDS laser in the 1S scans the surroundings faster.
Map saving. The new generation Xiaomi 1S has the ability to store maps in memory. The 1S is ideal for multi-level houses.
More suction. The newest generation has 2,000 Pa of suction while the Mi Robot - 1,800 Pa. It is enough to provide deep cleaning on carpets. The motor that delivers 2,000 Pa of suction is one of the strongest in the industry.
Powered by the next generation processor. The Mi Robot vacuum is powered with the quad-core Conrtex-A7; the Xiaomi 1S is equipped with the quad-core Conrtex-A35 which lowers consumption by 10%. Thanks to the newest gen of the processor, Xiaomi promises to reach 40% better performance.
Three vs. four processors to track location. The Mi Robot has three processors inside that help it to track the position while the 1S is equipped with four processors.
Xiaomi Ai speaker vs. Alexa integration. The oldest Xiaomi Mi Robot is compatible with Alexa-enabled devices and Google Home. The Xiaomi 1S is integrated with the Xiaomi AI speaker yet we hope the newest gen will be able to get compatible with Amazon Alexa and Google Home soon.
New charging dock. The newest generation Xiaomi 1S has an upgraded charging base. It now has room to hide the cable so the whole construction looks sleeker.
Xiaomi Mi Robot vacuum cleaner: quick glance.
The Xiaomi Mi Robot is equipped with an LDS laser that scans a cleaning area to create a map based on which the robot will be navigating further. There are three processors inside that help to track the device location in real-time which you can see in the Mi Home app.
The LIDAR mapping technology helps the robot to save battery energy since it does not go over the same spots a few times. Inside the Mi Home app, you can draw zoned cleaning - the area you want your cleaner to clean within.
The main cleaning brush, one side sweeper and strong suction work together to agitate dust and debris from floor to send it right into the dustbin.
The dustbin is not big and is highly recommended to empty after each cleaning cycle.
The 5,200 mAh battery lasts for up to 150 minutes which is the longest in the industry (only some of the Roborock models run this long). When the battery gets lower than 20% of energy, it docks itself to recharge up to 80%, and when the robot is done charging, it resumes cleaning in case it didn't finish.
The climbing ability of the Xiaomi Mi Robot is 15 mm which means it can clean carpets that are not thicker than 15 mm. Unfortunately, so far we don't know if Xiaomi has increased the clearance in the newest model.
The Mi Robot supports magnetic tape that supposed to block it from crossing some certain areas. Please note, the tape is not included in the box, it is sold separately.
Features the Xiaomi robot vacuum cleaners share:
- LIDAR. Both are equipped with the LDS laser that helps with creating an accurate map.
- Smart navigation. The Xiaomi cleaner moves back-and-forth in a purposeful pattern.
- Battery. Both are equipped with a built-in 5,200 mAh battery that lasts up to 150 minutes.
- Recharge & Resume. Both resume cleaning after recharging.
- Dustbin size. The same 420 ml dirt box is inside each of the Xiaomi robot cleaners.
- Real-time tracking. The Xiaomi cleaners can be tracked in real-time. You can see in the app how it's building the map.
- Manual movement control. With the Mi Home app, you can control your device like a radio car.
- The platform looks the same. Underneath the Mi Robot and 1S are a look-alike.
- The Mi Robot and 1S support zoned cleaning.
- The Xiaomi robot vacuums are equipped with 12 different sensors that help them to navigate around making it more efficient.
- The same accessory kit in the package.
What is new? Is the Xiaomi Mijia 1S robot vacuum cleaner worth buying?
Overall, both models look very similar. The newest gen has a visual sensor on top, other than that, it has the same design as the Xiaomi Mi Robot does.
As we said before, the newest 1S has stronger suction. It is now as powerful as the Roborock S5. Unfortunately, there is no info about the clearance so we can't say for sure if the newest Xiaomi cleaner can do thick carpets; hopefully, Xiaomi has increased it.
When it comes to mapping, Xiaomi claims the upgraded mechanism and the additional sensor provides creating maps that are more precious than the previous generation. And, let's not forget that the 1S now stores a few created maps in memory.
Also, there is the next generation of the Cortex processors that promises to lower consumption thus ensuring better performance.
Of course, the AI image recognizing is a cool feature. Older generations weren't able to identify each room, even though you could see the rooms in the map but hey, you knew where rooms in your home are located, right? Well, the robot did not. The newest generation, however, is able to identify the doors that lead to these rooms. We don't know how it will work in real life, but we hope the Xiaomi 1S got to the next level.
Thanks to the AI, now you can choose which room to clean. With the Mi Robot, you could set zones within which you'd like the device to clean though you weren't able to schedule cleaning with the zone that was already established. Many users wished this feature to be in the Mi Robot and apparently Xiaomi had heard them. The 1S has the ability to set schedule so the vacuum can work in one or two particular rooms.
Verdict: Is the newest Xiaomi 1S robot vacuum worth it?
Since both of the robots are quite similar, you definitely need more info that would help to choose the best.
The Xiaomi Mi Robot is perfect for big homes with a mixed surface and pet owners. It has strong suction and LIDAR helps it to navigate better saving battery life. Recharge & resume allows it to cover bigger areas in one cleaning cycle. Please note, if you have carpets that are thicker than 15 mm, the Xiaomi Mi Robot will not be able to vacuum those.
With all that's being said about the Mi Robot, we have to add the new features. Stronger suction helps to get deeper cleaning on carpets. Room cleaning is definitely a great feature, not every day you want to clean the whole house, some of the rooms get dirtier than others so why wouldn't you let the 1S run around those zones? The new laser gets the surrounding scanned faster which mean the vacuum will start cleaning in no-time. When it comes to cleaning performance, the 1S has to get the job better because of stronger suction and the advanced mapping system. Unfortunately, we don't know if it can go over thicker carpets, but if it does, the 1S would be definitely better for homes with carpets than the Xiaomi Mi Robot. Of course, the newest generation is a little bit more expensive than the Xiaomi Mi Robot but with keeping in mind all the improvements we would recommend getting the latest model.
