Summary

Overall, I'm very satisfied with the VIOMI VXRS01, and it's a good choice for such a price. The robot is doing a great job on carpets and hardwood floors, it has decent suction power and a long-lasting battery. Most of the robots in this price category have a random cleaning pattern, but this one, thanks to the powerful CPU inside this machine, build a layout of your house and choose the most efficient path to clean your house, without missing and repeating any places. Also, the washable filter, voice reporting, informative LCD screen, all these small things make this robot one of the best in this price range. The one thing I'm waiting for is an English localization for the app since it has only Chinese language at this moment.

Viomi Technology Co. Ltd. is a fast-growing Xiaomi-backed Chinese company that develops Internet-of-things-enabled smart home products. Recently, together with their partner Xiaomi, they launched a new product - the VIOMI VXRS01 robotic vacuum cleaner, and today we have an excellent opportunity to test this device.

The VIOMI VXRS01 Design

The VIOMI VXRS01 has a minimalistic and modern design. Built from a high-quality ABS, it doesn't feel cheap. I like that it has a simple but informative LCD on the top, and I think it's a good addition considering that it is a budget model. The display shows a lot of useful info such as current time, scheduled time icon, cleaning speed, cleaning mode, battery level. If the robot got stuck, side-brushes wrapped, you forgot to install the dustbin, or any other error occurred, you will see an error code on the screen. Near the screen, it has an omnidirectional infrared sensor that helps the robot to find its charging dock faster.

Dumping the dirt from the dustbin is easy to do, you need to push the button on the lid and remove the dustbin. The inlet inside the dust container has a cover which preventing the scattering of dust when you pull out the dustbin. I like that I can easily clean the suction fan since it is located under the dustbin when other robots have it hidden inside the robot.

There is only one button on the top side of the robot. You can start cleaning by pressing this button or hold it for 3 seconds to return the device to the charging dock. The button has a backlit which indicate the current status of the device: flashes blue - working, flashing red - charging/error, etc.

How the VIOMI robot avoids collisions and protects furniture

On the front side, the robot vacuum has a bumper which is a standard for such devices. It is a part of the collision protection system alongside with a bunch of infrared sensors hidden in the bumper and a soft rubber line: it helps the robot to avoid collisions with furniture and walls. From my own experience, the robot detects huge obstacles like walls and furniture, slowing down and stopping one inch from the obstacle without bumping to it. Like most of such devices, it is bumping to chair legs and other thin objects, though the soft rubber bumper protects your furniture from damage.

Cliff sensors have become a standard in robot vacuum industry, and this device isn't an exception. They are located at the bottom of the robot vacuum and protect from falling down the stairs, and I want to say that they are doing their job very well.

VIOMI VXRS01 bottom view

The robot has a relatively low profile. It fits easily under a sofa, you just need to be sure that there are 3.2 inches of vertical space under the furniture so the robot can go under it.

It seems like this robot vacuum doing a better job at avoiding obstacles than other devices for such price. Most of the robot vacuums in this price range have a random cleaning pattern which means they move randomly across your house, and since they don't know where they have already been, they missing some places when cleaning other areas several times. The VIOMI VXRS01 has a huge advantage compared to these devices: thanks to the dual-core ARM processor inside, SLAM technology, and smart navigation system based on gyroscope and speedometer, this machine calculate and precise its position and built the most efficient Z-shaped path to clean a house, without missing and repeating any places. And I want to tell you that it works very well. Of course, it is not as accurate and featured as robot vacuums with the LIDAR (invisible laser) sensor, but robot vacuums with the laser mapping are at least twice more expensive than the VIOMI VXRS01, so the gyroscope navigation system is an excellent alternative technology for budget devices.

XIAOMI VIOMI VXRS01 top view

Thanks to the gyroscope sensor, the robot builds a map (layout) of your house, and you can even see how the vacuum doing it in real-time and check the report after cleaning via the VIOMI Android or iOS app, however, at this moment the app has only Chinese localization. I contacted the manufacturer, and they say that they are working on English localization, and I believe they are since they want to sell this robot vacuum worldwide and everything in the box, like a user manual, or even the robot's voice is in English, and I hope that the English version on the app will be here soon.

How it climbs on thiсk carpets and over door thresholds?

Climbing ability is an important parameter if you have a medium or high-pile carpet, door thresholds, etc. Some robot vacuums can't climb even on medium-pile carpet and might get stuck on the border. Or what if you have a high threshold? VIOMI claims that their robot vacuum can overpass a 2 cm (0.78 inches) carpet, door threshold, or another obstacle. I made a test with a 1.5 cm plank, and the robot successfully climbed over it. I also noticed that the robot goes from a hardwood floor to medium pile carpet without any problem when the ILIFE V7 which we had the opportunity to test, could get stuck in such places with easy.

Cleaning Performance

All the robot vacuums that I have tested before were equipped with the main central brush that is located in the suction inlet, so I was a little bit disappointed that the VXRS01 didn't have it. This brush raises dust from the carpet and directs small debris to the suction inlet, so it's good to have it. But when I tested the robot, I was surprised by the cleaning performance it provides. This small suction inlet helps to concentrate all the suction power and increase it, so the robot doing a good job at picking up all the dust, pollens, and small debris from the carpet. And you know what is another advantage of the suction inlet without the brush? You don't need to clean a brush if there is no brush! All the robots I have tested that had the main brush wounded up my wife's long hair on the brush and I had to clean it every time, and it is such a headache!

VIOMI VXRS01 suction inlet

Some users claim that some robot vacuums with the main brush scratch their polished hardwood floors, so at least this model doesn't have this problem. So, maybe it is not a disadvantage, that the VIOMI VXRS01 doesn't have this brush. Pet owners also will be happy because if you have pets, you don't need to clean it every time from pet hair, yet still, need to clean the side brushes.

With regard to suction power, the robot provides a decent suction of 1,200 Pa, which is not bad for such devices. You can choose between two modes: normal and strong suction. Thanks to the brushless motor, the robot vacuum works quietly, producing less than 60 dB of noise, so in normal mode, you can even sleep while it is working.

VIOMI VXRS01 back view

Two side brushes developed to picking up small debris along walls and corners, and they somehow doing their job, but sometimes you need to clean the corner manually since all such devices are not perfect in cleaning corners or narrow spaces.

If you have a dirty place in your house that you want to be cleaned, you can send the robot to this place by the remote controller and start the spot cleaning mode. In this mode, the robot carefully cleans this area within 1-2 minutes covering one sq. meter in a spiral path.

Wet Mopping

Another nice feature in the VIOMI robot vacuum cleaner is the wet mopping function. It has an attachable water tank with a mop cloth, so if you have bare floors, this device can also be used as a mopping robot. To start a wet mopping, you need to fill the water container and attach the mopping pad to the robot's bottom. Water starts dropping from the water container slowly, making the cloth wet, and the robot is ready to go.

VIOMI VXRS01 water tank and mopping pad

Of course, it will not remove the settled dirt, yet can maintain cleanliness if you are using it every day. So I would say that the over performance is the same as in other similar devices. After cleaning, the mopping cloth can be washed under water; it's also great that there is a spare cloth in the box.

When mopping, the side brushes and suction motor are turned off.

Battery life and Auto-recharge

The 2,000mAh Li-ion battery inside the robot provides 90 - 120 minutes of continuous cleaning. It's enough to clean a medium house. If the battery power is low, the robot will automatically find its charging dock and go to recharging.

VXRS01 charging dock

I like that this model has the "Recharge & Resume" feature, it means if the robot has not finished the job on one charge, it will recharge and automatically continue the cleaning process from the spot where it has been stopped.

The battery can be easily replaced by the way.

Controlling the robot

There is an IR remote controller in the box, here is the list of commands that you can send by it:

  • start/stop the cleaning
  • return the robot to the charging dock
  • changing the cleaning mode
  • schedule the robot
  • adjust the suction power (normal/strong)
  • turn on mopping mode
  • start the spot cleaning
  • set up time on the robot's display
  • control the robot like a radio car

Other useful features

Scheduling

You can schedule the robot to clean every day in the specified time, so it can do the job even when you are not at home.

Voice prompts

The VIOMI VXRS01 talks in English, when you are changing settings, starting or stopping, sending it to the charging dock it confirms the action by voice. It can also inform you when some problems occurred or it gets stuck.

Real-time monitoring with the VIOMI smartphone app

The robot can be controlled by the VIOMI app which you can download and install on an Android or iOS smartphone. But there is one problem: the app has only Chinese localization at the moment. I contacted the manufacturer, and they claim that they are working on English localization which is great! The app allows you to do all the things you can do with the IR remote controller, and what is important, you can watch in real-time how the robot builds a map of your house. A fantastic feature for a budget robot, isn't it?

HEPA filtration

For those who suffer from allergies will be good to know that this model equipped with the HEPA filter which means that it is forcing air through a fine mesh and traps harmful particles such as dust mites, pollen, pet dander, etc. The robot comes with one spare filter in the box.

What in the box

The robot comes well packed and there are a few spare parts in the box. Here is what comes in the box:

  1. Robot vacuum
  2. Two HEPA filters
  3. Two extra side brushes
  4. IR remote controller
  5. Charging Dock
  6. English manual
  7. AC adapter
  8. Water tank with two cloths
  9. Cleaning brush

Maintenance and preparation before cleaning

I always prepare my apartment before starting the robot. It takes a few minutes to check if there are no wires or other small things on the floor, if you do this preparation, you will never have problems with the robot.

I emptying the dustbin after each usage, it's better to do it more often: less dust in the container - better suction and cleaning performance. I like that the robot has a washable HEPA filter, you don't need to replace it very often since it can be washed under water. If you have long hair or pets, from time to time you need to check if there are hair wounded on the side brushes.

Guys hi. If this Vacuum can connect to an app, it must have WiFi installed. HOW do we activate it? I use the VIOMI app in Chinese, and it asks me to connect the app to my home router.

Then it says to keep pushing the start button to activate WLAN in the vacuum. I do it, but nothing happens. Does anyone know HOW do we activate WLAN?
