Summary

The Alfawise V8S is a good choice for those who don't want to spend a lot of money on a robot vacuum, have a small or middle-sized house without or with thin carpets. It has very decent suction and long-lasting battery. Also, it has a gyroscope-based mapping feature, which is great for the price. There is no app support, and sometimes it can't climb on my middle pile carpet, navigation is not very accurate, but considering the price, it is a decent machine.

Robot vacuums are handy gadgets that help to keep your house floors clean without wasting time and effort. These devices become more popular and cheaper, so everyone can afford a smart robot vacuum cleaner. In this review, we are going to talk about one of these devices, the Alfawise V8S. Why this robovac worth our attention? Because despite the low price of ~130$ it has very decent suction power and planned z-shaped cleaning path. We've tested this robot vacuum carefully and wrote our thought about this device below.

Alfawise V8S Review

Alfawise V8S Design

The Alfawise V8S has a very minimalist look, and there is nothing to complain about the build quality of the robot vacuum, especially considering the low price.

You can start cleaning just by pressing a button on the top case or using the remote control. Like most of such devices, it has a roller cleaning brush located near to a suction inlet and two side brushes that sweep and agitate dirt to the suction inlet. I don't like the quality of the side brushes; it seems like they will not last long. At least, there are two spare side brushes in the box. The roller brush doesn't have any anti-tangle technology. If someone from your family has long hair, probably you would need to clean the roller brush from hair after every cleaning cycle.

The height of the Alfawise V8S is 8.00 cm, this is less than the height of an average robot vacuum and thanks to this it can reach more places under furniture.

This model has an average-sized dustbin. If you have an average house or apartment, you would need to empty it after each cleaning cycle. The dust container can be easily detached by pushing a button on the backside of the device. Inside the dustbin, you can find a filter; it can be easily removed and cleaned if needed. Unfortunately, it's not a HEPA filter, which is understandable for the price.

Cleaning performance

I was surprised by how good it cleans carpets and rugs. Our cleaning test shows great performance on a carpet comparable to much more expensive robot vacuums. The manufacturer claims 1,300 Pa of suction, which is impressive for such an affordable device. We measured airflow velocity with an anemometer, and it shows approximately 12 CFM, which is twice more than the Roomba 690 has. It looks like strong suction helps a lot in picking up debris from carpets.

The one thing that I don't like is that the robot vacuum sometimes can't go from bare floor to carpets. Even though the manufacturer claims that it can climb up to 15 mm height barrier, it can't overpass my carpet, which is 10 mm thick.

The problem is in the side brush design; they cling to the carpet and don't let the robot to climb on. It still works great on thin rugs, can cross over a low door threshold, but just keep in mind that it should be no higher than 10 mm.

The Alfawise V8S cleans bare floors very well, without leaving any debris or dust. Corner cleaning is not perfect. It still misses a small spot (5 cm x 5 cm) in the corner because of its round shape. Worth mentioning that almost all the robot vacuums do the same.

I like that this device is almost noiseless. It works really quiet even though it has strong suction. I've measured a noise level, and it was less than 59dB in MAX mode, so you can even sleep while the V8S works.

Battery life

It takes 1:35 hours to clean my 70 square meters apartment. I've run it twice to check how long the battery would last and after 1:55 hours the robot started searching the charging dock since the battery was low. I think it will be enough to can clean 100 sq. meters apartment on one charge without any problems.

When the entire apartment is cleaned, the Alfawise robot makes a funny sound, telling you the job is completed and automatically starts searching for the charging dock. In my case, it spent a minute or two to find the dock.

Also, the V8S can be recharged directly from a DC adapter, there is a DC-port where you can connect the cable.

Navigation

Most of the cheap robot vacuums have random cleaning pattern, they moving across your house randomly, bumping into walls and furniture, and moving in another direction. They miss some spots and repeat cleaning other places a few times since they don't know where they already cleaned. The Alfawise V8S is much smarter: thanks to a gyroscope sensor and a processor inside the robot, it remembers where it has already cleaned. It helps to finish a job faster than robot vacuums with a random cleaning pattern.

Worth to say mapping technology based on gyroscope is not as precise and accurate as Lidar or camera-based mapping. I had noticed a few glitches when robot cleaned my space. For example, in one room, I have a lot of chairs, furniture, and other objects and seems like the complex layout confuses the robot and it repeats cleaning the same spots a few times. I think it happens because of the map distortion. I have noticed the same behavior with all the robot vacuums with the gyroscope navigation. However, in a simple room layout without a lot of obstacles, it works perfectly moving back and forth with parallel lines.

Unfortunately, you can't see the map created by the Alfawise V8S since this model doesn't support an app control.

Remote control

There is an IR remote controller in the box which you can use to control the robot vacuum. With the IR-remote you can start cleaning, manually control the device like a radio car, start a spot cleaning mode or edge cleaning mode. I like the spot cleaning mode; in this mode the cleaner increase suction to the maximum level and provide more deep cleaning of the 1.5 x 1.5 sq. meters area.

There is only one button on the robot, which starts and stops cleaning. Unfortunately, you can't schedule this robot vacuum to clean at a specific time.
